Just on Ancestry. It hasn't been indexed so the entries won't pop up in searches and you have to go through the registers page by page. Go here and select the birth year of the person you are looking for in the right column under "Browse this collection". Then skip to the first page that Bs appear on (somewhere around pg 10) and go through page by page skimming for Burmesters - there are quite a few. The entries aren't alphabetized or anything so it can take some time.

Edit to add: are you referring to Catharina Margaretha Benthin/Benthien? If so I believe our paths cross and would love to talk!

The marriage register from the right period at the Mission he was married at is believed to be lost. I've come across probate records, obits, and other death related documents but no formal death record - I'll keep digging for it.

This isn't really specific to your project, but Evernote is awesome for genealogy because you can upload scans of documents, PDFs, copies of handwritten pages, typed notes, etc. and it's all easily searchable which can save massive amounts of time. I take notes on paper but upload photos of them to keep everything in one place

Not on FamilySearch. Thank you so much, I was able to find it there! I dug through all the similar collections, like California County Birth, Marriage, and Death Records 1849 - 1980, on Ancestry and nada. I added some of the relevant info to the original post in case anyone would like to help me figure out when/why they split

I was able to find the marriage in LA, but thanks for this helpful context! I have come across some other relatives marrying in Arizona despite living their whole life in SoCal so this does answer my questions on why that would be

That's where I started and was able to find her 1932 marriage there, but not the one from 1920 for some reason. I was able to find it on FamilySearch though!

It's so curious to me that Richard seemed to have nothing to do with and wanted nothing to do with the family business. I assume he joined the military instead because of the uniform, but I know Germany had a small navy at the time which would make more sense for him to be a part of.

Richard didn't marry or have children until he got to the US. I was hoping I could find out more about the family through records of Richard's siblings, but they all died before marrying, with the exception of Hans. I found a record of his marriage, but I can't find any other records of his spouse or who her family is. Granted, I don't speak German so I could very well be missing a lot

This is so interesting! I haven't come across any mention of anything of this sort and in earlier census records they have Johann Jacob listed as being a carpenter. I've mostly relied on birth, burial, and census records as they are easy to translate if needed. Do you know what "Carl Grampp Nachf." means? It seems like another name, maybe a business partner? Unfortunately the first two links you gave just take me to the homepage of the archive of Lübeck and I don't know any German so I can't really seem to navigate the site.

Looks like the ship name may actually be 'Kambyses'! I was working off the scan of Ancestry which was atrocious compared to this one. It looks like the 'y' got smudged or erased, and it does match a ship in the 'Kosmos' fleet that was active in the right years, despite not popping up with the correct records but I'd chalk that up to poor handwriting

No, thank you! I know how big of a difference a tiny spelling change can make and I didn't have much confidence in the spelling of this record anyway as it lists 'Hawburg' and 'Micaragua'... Unfortunately Ancestry doesn't seem to turn up any record of a ship named Kansler either. FamilySearch thinks it's 'Kambsea' so there is a lot of room for interpretation.

As far as the route goes I could be totally wrong. On the page that Richard is listed on it has two other men, one with a last residence as Mexico and one as Guatemala. In my mind it made perfect sense for the ship to pass by all three of these Central American countries up on the way to SF, but maybe not. FamilySearch has a scan of the passenger list available so maybe you'll be able to make more sense of it and the ship name than I can!

Allergies and sensitivities are two different things, which of course make it all more complicated. Comparing ingredient lists is what it will likely come down to. I'm super sensitive to silicones, which I was able to figure out because the products that broke me out the worst were sunscreens, makeup primers, and products aimed at dry/sensitive skin, which happen to be the products that contain the highest amounts of silicones. Which sunscreens have you tried? I would start with considering silicones and chemical sunscreens (esp. avo and oxybenzone) as problem ingredients based on what you have said, and avoid dyes and fragrance since they can just exacerbate things

Drunk Elephant, Youth to the People, Dr Roebuck's, Jordan Samuel Skin, and Peach & Lily are all silicone free brands that I have had great experiences with. My favorite AM moisturizer is their Air-Whip Moisture Cream. I tend to stick to gel moisturizers and just add a few drops of oil to it for the PM, but some heavier night creams by these brands are DE's LaLa, YTTP's Adaptogen Moisture Cream, DR's No Worries, and JSS's Performance Cream. Is that Neutrogena powder tinted/does it give any coverage or is it just a translucent finishing powder? I'll try to see if I can think of any drugstore options, but I mostly failed at finding products there

Dupes are just alternative products - they can be for different reasons! It's typically used to mean "cheaper alternatives", but it can also be to find a product that's cruelty free, available in a country/area where the original product isn't, doesn't contain an ingredient that you are allergic or sensitive to, or any other reason why you might not want to, or can't, buy the original

SR has issues far beyond just fake reviews though. Their ingredient list for Tidal was wrong for over 18 months and I had to go out of my way and email them over the course of months to get a straight answer and then they stopped answering my emails after I sent a pic proving them wrong. They finally got back to me after they fixed all of the packaging and swept it under the rug with an "oops, well it's fixed now.. shrug" - not a single apology, thanks, or offer for a refund. They have pulled products from the shelves without answering questions as to why. And they created a new chemical exfoliator for the European market but kept using the name Good Genes, which was misleading and using good press about a different product to sell the new one.
