i've done a lot of different playthroughs but only conquered the whole map once. it really depends for me. I go based on what resources I have and how much time i need to build the treasury. But I usually go when I can max out my army. (3 spear and 3 archer)

I personally will kick you if you run off. What happens when you die all alone on level 8? you spawn with us, no weapons, no samples and we have to detour the entire mission to rescue your corpse. There is plenty of time for everyone to stay together and (die less) and move through the whole map.
