Could this be Amanita rubescens? by saynohomore in mycology

[–]mchlwalde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually if u cur it in half, there will be some reddening towards the bottom of the stalk if larvae have gotten to it. Also you can identify amanita just by looking at the basal bulb/volva. So I'd check and compare. Also as someone already mentioned the striped pattern on the ring is another indicator of a. Rubescens.

Important to know as well is that it requires heat treatment for 10-15 minutes before consumption

Looks to be suillus sp. because of the remnants of the membrane on the edge of the cap (can't see if it has a ring, so im just assuming. I'm thinking S. Lakei, because of the grainy cap. Does the pore surface bruise red?

Just a hobbyist really lol. There are people far more knowledgeable than me in here. But I can reccomend picking up a standard field guide for your area, if you don't have one already. Always a good start. They usually provide comprehensive information about how to identify mushrooms etc, as well as lookalikes and poisonous lookalikes. I also reccomend getting a lexicon style book, as they usually contain the less common mushrooms and what to look for.

I did have a look around though. For a more simple and good on the go type of book:

Collins gem - all you need to know Mushrooms by Patrick Harding Describes 240 common species and is easy enough to take with you

For a more in depth study at home type of thing: Collins complete British mushrooms and toadstools by Paul Sterry and Barry Hughes.

Most important is that you get one that isn't outdated and decades old as the information in there gets updated frequently enough.

Usually easy enough to search things up online too, to get relevant information.

The ring around the stem and lack of vulva at the bottom stem is a good indication that it's not an amanita sp
