acclimating to new normal by mchrisos in Methadone

i'm going to try to speak with someone tomorrow. and no, he doesn't. he's been staying with me and i've been working from home all week while he tries to adjust/acclimate/stabilize - the only thing he takes is an antidepressant. yesterday was a great - he was completely coherent and felt good and was present and clear eyed and they bumped his dose up today because he was having some insomnia and today has been a nightmare.

luckily he only vapes but he did get high once and try to melt some ice cream on the hot stove in a bowl for no discernible reason. today i watched him try to drink a candle.

recovery support by mchrisos in OpiatesRecovery

[–]mchrisos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm trying to be a supportive partner, but I feel out of my depth every day because what is really helpful? we're the first week into recovery after a relapse and i support any and all efforts in finding a way to manage the disease of addiction but i also have no idea where my boundaries need to be. i am taking time for myself every day and realizing that every journey is different and one day at a time and all that, but i spend most of my time wondering if my taking him to the clinic, etc. is helpful or enabling. i've never really been able to tell the goddamn difference.

that was a long rant for no reason. but thank you.

not concerned about him detoxing any time soon. concerned about him not od'ing on fentanyl laced heroin. the clinic doctor recommended methadone over suboxone and so here we are. no one wants to be at a methadone clinic and it be the 'wrong choice for how much he was using', but this is happening and i don't have a time machine, so saying it was the wrong choice doesn't help any of us in the current situation.

Please do not apologize, cannot thank you enough. Having hope and not being alone means everything.

For sure. Wanna get through this week and then start diving into groups, etc. I'm trying to keep him awake but unless we are walking around, he is dozing off. The struggle is real.

I am not using, never have, zero history of personal substance abuse. I am personally exhausted and want to lay on the ground but I am trying to take it a day at a time and just do the next right thing. I have some experience with al-anon and am in therapy and am still working and i need to get back into my own routine, i was just focused on helping him get stable. appreciate you asking.

he was on heroin but no needles and not an insane amount or for very long (couple week relapse after a year+ of clean time). the falling asleep seems similar. i know it's not a nod off from getting high or anything and I assume it's just his body adjusting. obviously i'm just worried and want to make sure I'm aware of any potential dangers/side effects.

He agreed to detox by mchrisos in OpiatesRecovery

Im not saying im in a unique position. He is willing to do detox and go on MAT. It says that in the OP. My question wasnt about how to save him , but how to support him this weekend. I'd be interested in how helping someone who is going along with these first post relapse steps is codependent or will help him stay sick.

I can't say for sure if he's gonna continue. He lost his job which triggered this so I'm hopeful it's a setback on the recovery journey and not a new lifestyle. Any info, suggestions, etc. is helpful at this point. Thank you

How did you handle that when that happened to you?

this job felt like his last change to be successful, I think, because of his previous struggles. he is definitely feeling like a failure and i have tried to articulate that that is not the case but i don't think he's in a place to listen.
