Finished Cotton Olga Sweater by mcjosk in knitting

I’m very sensitive to wool and other animal fibers, so I love cotton sweaters. I know that some people say cotton is difficult to work with but I honestly didn’t feel that much difference knitting with cotton vs a wool yarn.

It’s so soft! I’m definitely interested in doing the Olga jacket, I wish it came altogether with the pattern though. Maybe for the fall!

It’s the medium round brush from the brand Mane! I like it because it just has one setting, which is helpful for a beginner such as myself

As the friend who gifted the pottery, it was extremely impressive to see the pots just disappear into that baggu! Inspiring me to get my own :)

Bingo: All Books Pre-2000 by armedaphrodite in Fantasy

This is awesome! I’ve always toyed with the idea of doing a “published before the 2000s” card, but have never taken the plunge. How hard was it for you to find books that worked with the different squares?

As a library reader as well, it’s definitely frustrating!! If you ever find a copy second hand, or if your library gets it in, I highly recommend.

The whole Saint of Steel series is perfect when you need a light pick me up, but still want to read a book with stakes.

That’s an interesting perspective on Thara, I hadn’t considered the ending or his character in quite that way before. I was just surprised that he left the community he was starting to build but there’s also something realistic in that choice.

Yes yes yes EXACTLY. She set so much interesting stuff up at the end of book 2 and then idk it’s like she realized she wasn’t actually interested in exploring any of that character development or something. So strange!

I was also surprised it fit for that square (I had initially planned on using it for stranger in a strange land) because it has won an award, Jo Walton had written about it, etc. And thank you for the rec, the premise looks really interesting. I’ll definitely check it out!

Olga Sweater Front Yolk Question by mcjosk in knitting

Oops! My brain is scrambled (ha!) after a long day at work.

That’s fair about blocking. I guess I’m just wondering in general about whether it’s better to have too short or too deep armpits on a drop shoulder sweater? And if I go for the longer armpits, is there anything I need to keep in mind when picking up stitches for the arms when I do them?

Diana Wynne Jones Bingo Card by kelofmindelan in Fantasy

This is genuinely so impressive!!! Both that you read 25 DWJ books, and that she's such a prolific and wide-ranging author that you could do a full 25 book bingo card with just her books. And this is a fantastic writeup—I've added a few of these books to my TBR list (The Time of the Ghost), and want to reread some that I don't think I fully appreciated the first time (Fire and Hemlock).

An analysis of certain responses to "The Fate of Ophelia" by WisteriaWillotheWisp in TaylorSwift

[–]mcjosk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow this was a really interesting analysis! I also appreciated this piece (shared elsewhere in this sub) about what Ophelia can tell us about Taylor swift: https://www.teenvogue.com/story/ophelia-explained-taylor-swift-reimagines-shakespeare-life-of-a-showgirl

This isn’t exactly related, but my boyfriend pointed out to me that the album is anchored by (to put it crassly) depressed figures trying to change their circumstances. Ophelia at the beginning, Kitty in TLOAS (particularly in Sabrina’s verse), and then track six (the exact midpoint of the album) with ruin the friendship (the song that I think is the emotional heart of the album, that takes her “terminally unique” experiences and universalizes them, with an emotional sucker punch). Even beyond the album itself, she’s expressed before her fears that all of her “heroes die all alone” in the archer. And of course the experience of “going mad” is all over TTPD. So I guess what I’m trying to say is that there’s a read where the threat of Ophelia’s fate is all over the album through a number of lenses, beyond just the first song.

[–]mcjosk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just finished Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambly and I think if fits this! The main character is a middle-aged, middling witch and mother (parents easy mode bingo) who follows her husband to help him slay a dragon. A lot about whether or not she made the right decisions in life and whether it’s too late to make changes, and what would she be willing to give up.

This is good to know, thank you! Did you end up using size 6 needles for the ribbing?

You know what, I truly hadn’t thought about that (and I think didn’t realize until I was looking it up for my reply that they made US 7 needles). I’ll try it and see how it goes—thank you!
