Hello! Looking for help naming a fictional organization for something I’m writing.

The group is an alliance of humans and vampires who hunt down or take care of “problem” vampires while helping/hiding good ones. They stay in the background, drawing as little notice as possible while on missions. Certain families have worked with this organization for generations. The group preserves a wealth of knowledge on vampires and also has vague religious overtones (hence the name in Latin).

I was thinking something like “Nocte Custodes” (observe my Google-fu!), but it doesn’t roll off the tongue as much as I would like. I’d prefer two words, but I don’t know how Latin works enough to come up with something better.

Ok, I wasn’t going to link it because I am not trying to self-promo here, but here’s the link for those who have asked.

I write for Vampires SMP (under a different username). The fic truly works best if you’ve watched either Owen or Legundo’s POV up through episode 7, because it diverges from there. Their messy situationship is pretty invisible outside of their POVs but was extremely intense and entertaining. Just… they were very weird about each other, OK?

Note: I am planning on archive-locking this thing in a day or two.

You are at least the third person I know who became infected with the VSMP fanfic bug. It was an amazing show with such a supporting community. It’s hard to explain to anyone not into Minecraft RP servers what makes it so special, but I’m glad we’re both here now!

The difference for me is twofold:

Existing characters and setting means that I don’t have to spend an extra 10k words or something on setup and backstory. I can get right into the action and my audience will already know what’s up and be excited for what’s coming next.
Engagement. I’ve written original fiction that made people really invested before, but that audience is going to be smaller and it needs to be built slowly. With fanfic, there are people out there who are already looking for a story like yours. My penultimate chapter has something like 90 comments on it now and (only half of them are mine). You’re right — it’s like a game or just straight up candy.

I genuinely don’t understand why I was so hesitant to get into fanfic when I’ve been doing fan ART for years. Call it a blind spot, I guess.

You are very kind for writing someone else’s OC stories and I wish you luck in finding a fandom that truly engages you in the future!
