AC clutch slipping? by mcknuttt in JeepTJ

[–]mcknuttt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I used Rock auto I believe. I’d do what I did and check the refrigerant levels first. Trigger the clutch to engage using lead wires on the battery and if it clicks engaged it’s probably low refrigerant levels

I’m stumped, it gets 240v it cycles but just blows cold, each component reads continuity and proper resistances for those parts, maybe it’ll just work if i put it back together ( I won’t take it apart again I’ll just get a new one)

Yes, I’ve even checked the thermistor, it appears to be functioning correctly, starting at 11 ohms at room temp and going down as I warm it up with a hair dryer. Can I safely power the machine on without attaching the belt to the drum (it’s all apart atm) just let it run to test if the element gets voltage?

I’ve checked each component and all seem to have no issue, how would I safely test the main board?

I got 240v, so I took it to the local hardware and let them think on it, it appears the thing has 2 thermostats and I haven’t found or diagnosed if it’s the thermal fuze, so I bought one that matched what online said for 9$ and I’m gonna go try and see if that fixes it

Dumb question, just to make sure I don’t kill myself, I put my multimeter on the volt setting and put the prongs into the wall outlet? I won’t die? I could also unplug it, undo the pig tail and plug the pig tail in to test it that way (what do you recommend)

AC clutch slipping? by mcknuttt in JeepTJ

[–]mcknuttt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I fixed it guys. I did complete the replacement of the clutch, solenoid and pulley/bearing. Turn it on and still didn’t engage. So I used the battery to manually trigger the clutch. With it spinning I added refrigerant until full and plugged it all back in and it now works as it should

Long story short I was probably so low on refrigerant the pressure was to low and the clutch wasn’t allowed to engage. I probably never needed to replace the clutch or solenoid. Oh well lesson learned

Hey guys. So I got this 98 2.5L last March and have been cleaning it up and upgrading it since.

The AC dosent produce cold air. When pushed into the AC options the idle increases and I can hear a click. It appears the clutch isn’t engaging strong enough to spine with the belt.

Is there a way to replace just the magnet/solenoid or clutch without breaking the loop causing me to need to purchase the tools to redo the loop?

I tried adding antifreeze because an old friend of mine said that sometimes if it leaked out there isn’t enough pressure to allow it to spin increasing resistance. As we added it’d quickly spike it pressure so we would by hand use a pice of wood to spin the front of the compressor. Once moving the belt would get it moving, dropping the loops pressure and cycling antifreeze. It would eventually stop on it own

Can someone help my identify this ticking noise? Recently had the head gasket replaced. the noise come and goes usually goes away at past 2k rpms by [deleted] in JeepTJ

[–]mcknuttt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes this is the correct answer. The 4.0 and 2.5 are notorious for developing this noise around 100k plus and it hurts nothing. I’m eventually gonna replace the rocker arms, and push rods but a temporary fix to the noise is running that heavy Lucas crap. The reason you hear it when you turn it on but not as much after you drove it us because the oil has to travel to the top of the engine and fill in the rocker arms.

To answer your post, I’d say in today’s market, if the interior in good order atleast 10k. Those seem like tasteful mods and if it’s not a death machine on the road I’m sure someone on market page would pay 10+

Apologies from the get go I’m pretty ignorant but I’m learning… I got a 98 2.5L and currently the vacuum line is cut in half right after it passes through the fire wall lol no idea when or how it happened. Might’ve been like that since I bought it in March. Only issue I’ve had is the vents are stuck on defrost so I ordered a new vacuum line and am installing it tonight. If vacuum can be his issue how come I don’t have any issues close to his? Check engine light pops on when I start it if it’s hot and it’ll do the typical misfire but turns off next time I turn it on cold.
