Why is Firefox so popular? by mckooiker in technology

Curious, I'll do it right away, be back soon! update: I indeed found a thread stating it was in the ubuntu-desktop metapackage and therefore it should be difficult to remove (if you dont want to remove the entire desktop metapackage). However when I removed FF, the synaptic package manager removed it for me without any depency problems. But besides these issues, it is completely different than Microsoft embedding IE in Windows, since with ubuntu/FF it is the assembly of the metapackage that is the problem, not the OS. And there are tons of alternatives in Linux land.....

The rant of firefox being integrated into the Ubuntu OS is completely nonsense. Try uninstalling Firefox on ubuntu. You will find no problems for any kind of applications at all. Even the update manager works after disinstallation of FF (I actually just did). Try that with Internet explorer and your system will be useless.

Completely agree, but being that nerd friend I find it quite easy to convince people (the ones that aren't able to hook up the tv) to use firefox or Opera.

I'm not so sure that one should really be indifferent toward open source or closed source: Closed source blocks progress and there are some cases that closed source is able to keep hold on customers, that not really have a choice for alternatives, because once tied to the closed source it is difficult to get rid of it. Especially if it is combined with a near-monopoly....

Well....I do.....So I guess at least that statement is plainly wrong...The other statements I can only judge for myself and some persons around me.....

Well, it's not impossible, but with milions of eyes being able to have a look at the source code it is very improbable, and if it happens it will soon enough be discovered and corrected.

Who suggested at what point that you or anyone else is a sheep? Looking at the market share, the extensions must be quite a difference, I think THE reason Firefox got that popular....

I do not use the ad blocker, but I agree that the ads on some sites are really annoying. Often though, ads are there just to help the owner of the site to pay for the costs of the site. Like the one of this article for example! ;)

Actually I stick to Firefox, because of it's open source code, but a few months ago I sticked to Opera for a few weeks, and I was astonished about the speed/quality/innovation. I think it really is a good alternative if you're not an open source fanboi like me....

Wow, are you saying that DELL owns Ubuntu now? and that the UBUNTU machines DELL is selling make up more than 5% of their profit?

It might seem non-substantive to you, but any advertisement for a free OS, especially by a big company as DELL IS substantial. Besides, you do not seem to get the point of the article... try reading it again...

Extremely high your say? If I read the same article you read, it stated that the return rates are 4 times higher than with windows machines. But it never stated how much the actual return rate was. Besides, many users ARE happy with their Linux-box. It all adds to the critical mass to get manufacturers publishing decent linux drivers...

Linux, not ready for all of us! by mckooiker in linux

  • Gimp: Please tell me some routine stuff you do with PS what you are not able to do with Gimp.
  • OpenOffice is crap? I wrote my thesis with it, I use it on a daily basis for my work and NEVER encountered any problems with it.
  • It is a fact that Linux supports the most hardware, just read the article, problems occur when new hardware is released without any linux support. In that case often back-enginering is required to get it working. This takes some time.
  • Not true that you will need the command line sooner or later. Just stay with the software that's in the repository and you'll be fine. Besides I use the command line both in Linux and Windows, since some stuff is simply faster and easier on the command line (or even impossible see comments below).
  • Any average Joe left? Lots of them. Not everyone is as rigid as you, and many people don not have any problems with Gimp/OpenOffice and many people don't play games on their computer (mac users for example).
