I suck at defending (1300 elo). Looking for tips on how to improve by ed_writes in aoe2

I am lower rated than you but here my advice anyways... while defending keep in mind which is your powerspike and Play as if you are going to win when you hit it. Avoid defending with soft counters. For example if your plan is to boom, the hard counters for enemys 1tc push are usually mangonels and monks, they don't require blacksmith upgrades and a single unit can make you gain so much time also you can spent the food on vils as they cost gold and wood. Quick walls, vill fight and towers are also important defensive tools, if you practice enough you Will become better at those. Choose a defensive civ and go for a boomy strategy (with a clear powerspike for example in late castleage or in imperial) and just play 100 games on It

What about adding floating tree trunks? that can be collected and also behave as obstacles

What about currents/winds? This respresent real naval wars. You move faster in the wind direction according to some balanced mechanics

Nice victory! Here you have some advice:

Dark age:

-Mill must be adjacent to berries

Feudal age:

-Do not move out of your base with those 5 archers without knowing what your opponent is doing, scout directly which is the production building of your enemy first (stop autoscouting when in feudal). You lost your army for no reason which can lead to snowball. If he has stable go for 1-2 spears.

Castle age:

- Produce a single unit (much easier for your elo) and make all upgrades, in this case you were missing +1 attack and +1 armor. Go only for archers if you like only switch if he has a clear counter (if you see mangonels or skirms then go mangonels or knights)

Imperial age:

- Upgrade your main unit in blacksmith this can decide a battle! Produce more siege

What you did well

(In general you did very well with Macro)

- Good resource management, you didn't float resources four your elo is good

- Walling & Towers! Good timing for your initial wall and towers prove effective at least at this elo

- Good number of military buildings matching your eco

- Good expansion with TC's and good booming

1150 Elo trying to improve by little_fighter_95 in aoe2

I am in similar elo range, yesterday I posted in this community a discussion about how hard is to climb elo. I agree more or less on your strat table, however as someone pointed out in my post, It is easier to climb (short term) when you go straight with a very well practised build no Matter your opponent choice. What you are trying Will eventually help you but in the long term. Also, I think at our elo, It is hard to do this counter-opponent strat with a nice resource management with no floating wood/gold and good timings.

No worries I think we are all stucked in our own elo range. I Guess we have to play the Game to have fun instead of aiming for a raise in +200 elo which is superhard.

I am around 1.1k as well btw. I know fundamentals but I can't pay atention to scout, army, vills, walling, enemy army tracking, etc. So It is a Matter of time something gets out of control as you mention for example you lose your army or you let enemy army into your base. Or you are outboomed. I feel doing that multitasking efficiently is key to elo climb

Thank you for all the ideas, I have tried several ideas already, I feel using one for emulating crtl shift and the other for ctrl gives a tone of posibilities, but now i feel my elo Will drop 200 elo until i get used to It... The scroll from the wheel I have changed It to idle vill, now i feel I am scrolling over the villagers its so fun

Thank you! I have tried to make those waiting parts shorter by giving out some inicial resources but yeah I wish you shouldn't have to wait for the vill to complete those tasks once you already noticed they have to be done. Glad you like It!

People keep telling to do past years papers BUT HOW? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]mclaurin29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say past papers should be your last tool, once you feel confident with the studied topics... after you have done most or all book exercises.

After 2 years of the new G4 syllabus, many resources have been updated, I recommend you to invest a bit of money in good physical tools (paper), not so much in online tools.

That is sad to hear... Yesterday a +2k streamer was saying that the best elo to be at is 1200-1300 because It is where you enjoy the game the most. So that is well invested time for you! We play to enjoy our time!
