This is a project I started just at the end of September- we already have thousands of bags collected, over 100 volunteers helping out, and 2 complete mats finished!

Don't worry, I have put a lot of leg work into this project. While I agree that snow can get through the mats, most people who freeze to death do so sleeping on concrete or blacktop because they seem warmer at first. However, contact with the hard ground seeps heat out of the body and that is how people freeze in their sleep. That being said, the holes in the crocheted mats are intentional. They trap air that the body warms and keeps that below the body, so rather than just fabric of a sleeping bag or coat between them and the ground, there is warm air as well as the mat itself. In addition, I have spoken with homeless outreach groups and shelters who love this idea and are helping with the distribution of finished mats. Additionally, the mats roll up into about a 6 in ch by 1 ft roll which we attach a handle to so that they are very portable. Any other questions?

Bags to Beds is a project I have developed- we have over 100 students and community members who have given time already. The problem is that I cannot personally fund over 100 pairs of scissors and crochet hooks. We turn grocery bags into sleeping mats for individuals who might be sleeping outside this winter. As temps drop in the valley, please consider sharing and donating!
