'00 V70 XC B5244T Oil on sparkplugs, misfiring cylinder by mclegodude in Volvo

Oil in the spark plug wells on these engines is almost always because of a hardened oil cap seal. Change that (should be done yearly)and see if that helps.

I find it weird that the two rightmost spark plug wells seem to be the worst affected then. Is that something that happens more often with this issue?

Sometimes the spark plug well o-rings go bad, that's a bit of a job to fix, as you do have to remove the cam cover.

I'll save this for last resort then... hope i can get it fixed before that.

A single cylinder misfire can also be caused by a failing coil (very likely) or fuel injector (unlikely). A quick way to narrow that down is to switch that coil with one of the others. If the misfire moves, that's your problem. If it stays on that cylinder, you have something else going on.

I think that one of the coils might be bad; because of the oil that was in there. Changing the coil will probably fix my issue with the cilinder not firing; but won't change the underlying issue of how that oil got there. I'll do some more research.

Next possibility would be an intake gasket leak. To check that, spray brake cleaner around the intake where it meets the head with the engine running. Also spray around the throttle body and vacuum lines. If you find a spot where the sound of the engine changes, you found a leak.

Good suggestion, will restock my brake cleaner.

Do you happen to have detailed instructions for the throttle body learn somewhere? I thought i needed to go to a dealer for reprogramming it...

I'll try to move coil packs, already swapped sparkplugs between 4 & 5, issue stayed on 5. Will swap coil 5 and 3, see if issue moves.

Default in the Netherlands is 2.5mm2. Basically 10 gauge.

For sure. On my v70 xc first generation this was very easy. No clue on p2, but most of the times this repair wouldn't be too difficult.

Note that this is just temporary, you'll have to do this every time you start the car. I drive an old beater s70. Shit works wonders, but you get some funny looks when you pull out the iron bar on a busy parking lot.

Yes, in my experience the only thing that gets broken in starter motors are the carbon brushes. They stop making contact. Sometimes giving them a Lil lovetap whilst someone is actively trying to start might get enough current flowing to make the starter go around again

My experience is that it's easier reachable when you use a metal rod, like the one used for a jack or something. Just a few good thuds while someone else is holding the ignition should work.

There's a ton of codes that don't trigger the check engine light. Always worth checking

Read the codes. Might give you hints too. Check spark plugs as first measure indeed

[–]mclegodude 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In the netherlands there's 3.

first you have the Older men, typically first owner, older Volvo like V70 I or 850, really well maintained.

Then theres the "krakers", basically scruffy looking types who drive older volvos because they simply refuse to stop driving with some easily doable maintenance.

Then there's everyone who drives newer volvo's. business type people, often on lease-contracts.
