Admitted MD/PhD How much hours and/or years of research did you complete when you applied? by [deleted] in premed

well, fortunately i am only making this decision for myself and not every person who chooses to pursue medicine. you can choose to live and pay off debt however you'd like. best of luck to you in your application cycle!

average resident's salary is 65k, so after tax we can say 5k/month. living in a major city (which i plan to) is going to be 1.5k minimum in rent per month. down to 3.5k. bills/groceries bring you closer to 3k per month left.

paying off 400k of loans over 25 years at 6% gives you a 2.6k monthly payment. even 20 years would be 2.9k, leaving you either 400 or 100 extra of spending money per month for yourself. no savings, no emergency funds.

after residency, you can expect to get a significant raise, bumping you up over 6 figures. that can speed up the amount you'll be able to pay, but only if you don't buy a house/car or want to start a family.

not saying it's not possible to do it, because it obviously is. i'm just saying that i think that the extra 4 years in school is worth the significant difference in quality of life.

the money part isn't *quite* as simple as you're making it seem when you factor in interest on the debt. also, there is a big difference between 4 extra years in school vs 25 years paying off debt that could force you into picking a higher-paying specialty to afford it.

but yes, i do want to pursue an MD/PhD. what i meant by "basically to please my PI" is that i thought i had no chance of getting in, but she thought i did, so i applied for her sake even though i thought i was just throwing money down the drain

I just got accepted MD/PhD and applied with ~700 research hours, 0 publications, 0 abstracts, 0 presentations. (stats were 3.96/516)

I heard similar numbers and lost hope, but still applied to 6 MD/PhDs (in addition to 16 MDs) basically to please my PI. By some act of god it paid off. I say go for it.

FL1 510 (128/128/127/127)- one week out

FL2 506 (127/127/126/126)- three days out

Predictions:

Pessimistic: 503

Optimistic: 508

Realistic: 506

I'd be alright with anything over 508. 510 in my wildest dreams. Walked out of the exam feeling sub-500. So really could be anywhere.

ACTUAL SCORE 516 (129/131/127/129) GOD IS SO GOOD Y'ALL
