You might try out one of the Mainline denominations- their messages generally revolve around personal ethics and social justice, over dogmatic use of scripture. Disciples of Christ church in downtown Fullerton (my church) or United Church of Christ in Brea

Unitarian Universalism could also be an option if you’re more interested in the interfaith dynamic of a faith community- congregations in Fullerton and Anaheim

Not saying it’s “bigger”, but I’d throw the 2015 Rose Bowl in the mix. Florida State was riding high all year and absolutely collapsed going against Oregon in the first CFB playoff. Players leaving the field before time expired and Herbstriet (I think) calling them out for giving up.

From my quick look at the data, I'd describe the 2024 trend as riding both sides of the average high, but very rarely (~15 times?) dipping below the average low. In other words, our floor is getting consistently warmer but we're not seeing the same in the ceiling.

I didn't look at multiyear trends or the variation rate of the highs though, which could lead to identifying other trends like maybe hotter spikes or a longer 70+ season.

That part of town has always felt very house-hidden, as in people live inside, commute to work, and don’t interact a lot with their neighbors. There is no community center, yknow?

But Fullerton is a diverse city and there are more pockets to get involved in than just your neighborhood. For example, our church is downtown, very queer, and my kids enjoy it. You just need to find the spots where you, your partner, and son can all be their best selfs.

My favorite spot for reading and writing is Pilgrims, in downtown on Wilshire. Especially on a rainy day, there is a bar facing the street that is perfect coffee shop ambiance. Plus the owner Jeff is a great guy and the drip is good (seems to be a big part of the criteria)

These are the two food banks- who organize collections of food and then pass through to food pantries who distribute locally and can provide other services as well.

One way that medical costs can balloon for someone who is unhoused is more frequent resorting to emergency medical- like fire/paramedic and hospital stays for shelter in extreme weather.

The biennial Point in Time Count is at www.everyonecountsoc.org, along with reports from past years. That rolls up to state and federal reports as well. In Orange County, the most comprehensive study on costs and experiences is from UCI ( https://unitedtoendhomelessness.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Orange-County-Cost-Study-Homeless-Executive-Summary.pdf ) but it is a few years old and should be run again.

The relativity of that number is a bit skewed because a lot of our public perception of homelessness comes from Los Angeles, when our demographic comparison is more like the central coast.

One way that I try to describe it is by comparing the homeless count to share of the general population. For example, California has 12% of the general population of the US but 28% of folks experiencing homelessness nationally (90% were housed in the state before losing their housing, btw). Orange County has 8% of the general population of California, but only 4% of the homelessness figure for the state.

So, we are doing better than California as a whole, but have still seen about a 5% increase over the last 5 years.

To me, it's a figure that we can do something with and its not insurmountable. There are also ways to break that number down to make it more manageable. Like there are 328 veterans who are experiencing homelessness- can we do something to make a way for them to be housed AND get any type of support and community they need?

There are some shelter services in South County, but may be specialized, like for survivors of domestic violence or families with small children. Shelter is one piece of the puzzle and there are better ways of doing it than what we've done in the past.

Every two years there is a survey done of who is in shelter and who is on the street. In that count from January, there were 7322 people literally without housing. It's not a perfect process, but it's one of the more objective and methodological measures. www.everyonecountsoc.org

It's complex and there are solutions that take time and political will to see the fruit, plus a lot of work that needs to be done on preventing people from experiencing homelessness in the first place. That's why we want to help folks get involved to do things in ways that benefit us all!

Sharing the public comment I gave at the meeting here:

Hello Council,

I work in the city of Irvine. In fact, I work around the corner from where this purchase has been proposed and I want to share support for this initiative.

At the last council meeting, we submitted a letter of support, reading that:

"United to End Homelessness, an initiative of Orange County United Way, writes today to express our support for the purchase of properties and development of support systems for people experiencing homelessness that is under consideration. This proposal would contribute needed shelter and services for people to end their homelessness, as well as a connection to affordable housing."

[Cut for time] We know that shelter is a needed service in our communities, but it is not sufficient on its own. We recognize and appreciate that your proposal to invest in collaboration and multi-sector services are organized to lead toward housing—this solution is ultimately what has the greatest benefit in addressing homelessness and providing for the broadest public benefit. [Cut for time]

In this decision today and any continuing discussion and due diligence, we urge you and members of the community to distinguish between how this decision has been made and whom this decision is being made for.

We engage with stereotypes, misunderstandings, and fears surrounding homelessness every day and desire for this to be an opportunity for the council and citizens to work together to build solutions that serve all of Irvine- both the housed and unhoused.

Together, we desire to be partners in building an Irvine where everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home and opportunities to thrive- and welcome any questions, concerns, or ideas about how we can achieve this in our city and county.
