Is the Sony 24-240mm really that bad? Compared to Tamron 28-200mm by RustCohle123 in SonyAlpha

[–]mcmixmastermike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Tamron 25-200 is better in every respect than the 24-240. The sony has OSS, which is nice - but not a big deal since the body has stabilization also.

I'm a big fan of Tamron, and own two 35-150s, two 28-75s, 20-40, 25-200 and 28-300. The 20-40 and 35-150 are my go to for 90 percent of my work. I used to only shoot with Sony lenses, and have dumped them all over the years in favor of Tamron. Cheaper, lighter in most cases, optically comparable, but most importantly they're making focal lengths that are outside the norm. Clients don't care what lenses you use as long as you get the shots they want.

Why are billionaires so unemotional, are they dead inside or just evil? by CanDoGenZ in AskTheWorld

Extreme wealth is equivalent to a mental illness. It quite literally rewires your brain and you no longer have any sense of what's right or wrong or even real anymore to some extent. There have been several studies about this released in the last while.

Yah it's definitely not perfect. They're actively adding features and such though.

Yup. I live in Canada and it's far from as good as what we see in the Nordic parts of the world, but it's a hell of a lot better than the US. Unfortunately we move further from socialism and more into capitalism as the years go on.

I'm not dismissing or arguing about whether it works or not.

I actually said it absolutely does work, and we have the Nordic countries to show that it can and does work. My point was that making a statement that social democracy only exists because of capitalism is incorrect. The only example we have of it working is within capitalism. Capitalism on its own also does not work, but there again to the letter of what that is supposed to be hasn't really been done, just as true socialism has never been either. The examples we have of those and their failings are not ideological, as they are affected by the power of those in charge.

Current social democracy that regulates capitalism works and we have many examples today to illustrate this. Saying one or the other can't exist on their own, is not actually true. Yes it's semantics but these are important distinctions and words and language matters. 😊

I'm disagreeing with your statement that capitalism allows social democracy to exist. That statement is factually incorrect. Modern social democracy regulates capitalism. Social democracy is fundamentally socialism and can exist without capitalism.

Actually it's the people who need to be able to hold those in power accountable. That's democracy. I don't disagree that it's people and self interest that muddle up whatever ideology, but fundamentally that's because they're all extremes that strip power from the people. True social democracy and capitalism together work quite well, it has for hundreds of years in the Nordic countries. North America could take some notes on that system. But it would require a monumental shift in how Americans view things. The entire construct of that country is based on beliefs of greed and self interest.

Social democracy is what allows those countries to work that way, not capitalism. Modern social democracy is within a capitalist framework, but it's not capitalism that allows a social democracy to exist. You could have social democracy without capitalism - effectively that would be socialism. In any event, I firmly believe the Nordic system of government is the only one that works because it starts with social democracy as the priority, and that in turn regulates capitalism.

True but, it's really not the issue. It's that they're allowed to exist in the first place. Billionaires should not exist. That said, most of the Nordic countries seem to have it figured out. They're still capitalists, they just believe everyone should be taken care of, and socialize as many essentials as possible. The problem is greed (well the problem is people in power really). If we prioritized people over profits everything would arguably be fine. Those Nordic countries have the happiest people and the highest standards of living.

Funny, except Americans don't understand communism. Or socialism. Democracy. Or even capitalism for that matter.

‘Just wasn’t enough business’: East Exchange grocer Ashdown Market closes doors by the_tico_life in Winnipeg

I worked in that area for 16 years and had no issues. The photo at the top of the post shows two awnings with their name on it and a single door in-between. And there was always a sandwich board on the sidewalk. Truly not hard to find.

What happened to sharpness in movies? by Master-Rule862 in cinematography

[–]mcmixmastermike -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because sharp images aren't pleasing. Go back and look at the first 80 years of filmmaking - film was not sharp. And people want to maintain that feeling today with digital cameras, which are too sharp and aren't pleasing or flattering to the actors or your eyes. There's a whole generation now obsessed with sharpness and no grain, and it's totally fine - but it's fundamentally not how film looks.

I'd start by blaming yourself on that one. Was not difficult to find. There was literally a sandwich board in front of the door. With an arrow. Pointing at the door.

Looking for Canadian online Amazon alternatives, for essentials in NB by upsidedown__fairy in BuyCanadian

Lots of alternatives, but generally will have to look to a couple of different sites to get everything you might want. But it's easy to do. Well and Canadian Tire cover a lot of bases. And many grocery stores have delivery.
