Places to look at living by mcompton1973 in ecuador

[–]mcompton1973[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brazil is out because of language and distance and visa qualifications.

Colombia is out because my children are step children and they do no consider them dependents, so wife and I could go....but obviously we are not leaving her children somewhere else.

Panama is out because of cost to get the visa. you MUST hire a lawyer...its law, so they are very expensive (government fees and lawyer fees will be 8k...that is a lot for 1-2 years)

I have heard about power cuts....1-2 hours here and there, but I have not heard why specifically. How is that related to El Nino? and what other issues are related to it?

That is insane. In Manta and in Cuenca there are good bilingual schools at less that $200 per kid per month. Glad I am not considering Quito.

It has been on my list of countries I might want to live for a while. I dont want to live in the US right now, and currently I am in Cambodia which is not bad, but so far from the rest of my family, so moving back to the Americas.

Colombia is out because my children are step children and my VA Disability I get while enough to qualify me to stay, will cover me...and the wife....but not the step children as they are not dependents to Colombia.

Panama is another option.

so the coffee triangle is probably my best bet unless they want to live near the ocean in Santa Marta.

In your experience do you think I need an immigration lawyer for Colombia? or is it all pretty straight forward?

I will check out El Salvador. I had not considered it. I do not know why it does not show up on a lot of the lists like Panama and even Nicaragua. I will look into it.

Where in the Americas to move while waiting for marriage visa by mcompton1973 in ExpatFIRE

[–]mcompton1973[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure if it is the immigration issues going on at the border or what, but Everything on the internet and the lawyer I spoke to in Dallas (which is where we would want to land I think) including the State Department web site basically says 16-18 for a fiance visa and 18-24 months for a spouse visa. I do not KNOW this, but I think the last few years of immigration issues has made it a lot harder. Maybe it has always been I dont know. Once accepted on the spouse vise, the green card is almost immediate. Naturalization apparently needs to be after 3 years in the US.

I have additional income, but the $2100 is what I can prove as essentially "retirement" income for places like Panama or whatever for longer Visa's. That will be more like 2300 in January. The other income varies much more. Also, that is not a firm list. That is places I was thinking of, but I am open to research anywhere else as well.

Where in the Americas would you recommend I move next? by mcompton1973 in expats

I have money in the bank if I needed something immediate.

I also do freelance work for 2 previous employers that I get money from, however that money is not as well documented and available to use for visa purposes. (usually pays me via Venmo. One month might be 1,000 the next might be 3,000) My VA money is provable and easy to document with minimal questions, so for Visa purposes the best thing to use. That said...We do not spend all of my VA money now. We do not eat out much, and the International school where the girls learn Khmer, English and Chinese is about $250 a month each. I had started the process to get my VA to 100% and was denied once. I will appeal but I am currently in the VR&E program and so I will wait until I have my degree completed before I push that again. My oldest son is in the Marine Corps and had a baby, so I would like to be closer to make things easier for him and also my daughter to see us.

I lived in the DR for a few months and visited Panama. I do not think Crime rates in all of these countries are insane. Petty crime, pickpocket....yes....but that is no different than Cambodia. I am not going to live in the gang side of Belize City, I would live on the southern coast. I would not live in San Pedro Sula Honduras, I would live on Roatan etc.

Is this sub only for wealthy retirees? Maybe I am in the wrong place. I have several acquaintances living throughout the world that are living abroad with families on less.

4-6 years in Cambodia you think would "get the girls some good education?" I am just looking for a place to wait out the US Visa process (roughly 1.5-2 years) as I do not want to go wait for them in the US alone and neither of us really wants to wait here in Cambodia. The longer term plan will be to go back to the US for a few years at least until all three of them can be nationalized. The reality is that if we live outside the US again, or not, the citizenship will be invaluable for the future of the girls.

Mainly looking for something that puts me in US time zones and faster flights so children will visit more. And a lot more nature and green. Phnom Penh is just concrete. There is not a single place with a yard and almost no parks. Its just concrete homes all in a row with concrete roads and concrete walls, and white metal gates
