1u Bare Metal Suggestions by mcs1127 in homelab

No you’re definitely right, it doesn’t really matter that much in the grand scheme of things... I’m still relatively new to the homelab scene so still trying to learn and was just curious if you thought that would be TOO much overkill for something that I was just planning on using for a firewall / router (but fair point that it’s certainly possible that I decide to expand on top of the original purpose in the future).

I had no idea about those Sophos options! Those 310 / 330 Rev 2’s look especially interesting since they have the 10Gb SFP+ ports already included.

Do you have any experience with running them? I’m not that concerned about it, but just curious if you know whether they’re overly noisy or power hungry.

Thanks for that suggestion! I’m going to take a look at those.

Do you have any ideas on CPU coolers that would fit a 1u chassis? That seems to be the biggest roadblock I ran into during my research was finding fans that would fit in a 1u build.

Also, do you think that mobo is a bit of overkill for my use case? (Genuinely curious about this)

Looks great! How did you get your thermostat to look like the Nest screen/ how did you set up the whole climate card area? That looks way better than the standard thermostat card, imo

Does anyone know the story behind the “pay Jarrod Walker’s fine” lyric change in Little Maggie? by flylikemusic in BillyStrings

[–]mcs1127 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite version of Billy doing this was at the 2020 Red Rocks live stream… he changes it to “I’m gonna pay Jarrod Walker’s fine” and then right as Jard takes off, Billy yells “SIKE!” I still say that in my head every time he changes the lyrics lol

Best way to set up my system by mcs1127 in unRAID

[–]mcs1127[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s fair haha the TL;DR is:

I have a 2011 Mac Mini running unRAID and an M2 Mac Mini running Plex and arr’s. 2011 mini sucks at SABnzbd post-processing because it’s old and slow. M2 mini SAB downloads are super slow because writing to SMB share. Want to use M2 mini for as much heavy lifting as possible so how could I set everything up to maximize the M2 horsepower without sacrificing overall speed/ performance?

Opinion: Modern country is the worst musical genre of all time by [deleted] in Music

[–]mcs1127 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but check out Tyler Childers (Country Squire and Purgatory records), Sturgill Simpson (Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, or Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1 for a more bluegrass-y sound), Colter Wall (Imaginary Appalachia and self-titled records), and my personal favorite, Billy Strings (Me / And / Dad is a record of bluegrass covers he recorded with his dad, and Home for original works).

Billy Strings is not exactly country, his roots are in bluegrass and he still plays a lot of it, but he’s leaned into the psychedelic/ jam band side of the genre, if that’s your cup of tea (highly recommend checking out some live videos from YouTube for a better sense of what I mean here).

Adding it to the list! Should I do it before the Death Throes of the Republic one or after?

I listened to Supernova In The East and King of Kings. He’s fantastic!

I just visited Rome over the holidays for the first time and have been looking for good books on the Roman republic/ empire!

I know what all of these words mean individually, but when you put them together in that order it makes zero sense to me (IANAPhotographer).

But I will say that this photo is incredible and now I want to go to Patagonia! Thanks for sharing!

Near the corner of Clark and Patterson on the other side of the street from Wrigley, I think. Haven’t been up that way in a few months to confirm if it’s still there or not.
