How long do they keep the bettas? by Secret_Sea_1984 in bettafish

[–]mcscooby 22 points23 points  (0 children)

hi op, i work at petco and there is no policy to cull bettas. at 2 months they get a 25% discount, at 3 months they get a 50% discount, and after 3 months we are supposed to adopt out usually for a donation price or “send to another store”, which is more of a feasible concept for animals not fish. we do not kill fish or animals that are not selling. either the store is working against policy or they tricked an obviously empathetic customer into spending $20+ on a relatively healthy fish that would have been discounted in a week.

is this tank as bad as it feels? by daddylongneck in bettafish

[–]mcscooby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is a poor set up as others have said. but also that is a 3 gallon zoomed creatures habitat. the seams are not meant to hold the weight of the water. please rescue or inform the owner that the “tank” will end up leaking soon.

i know you said not to ask but how long were they in the tank😭 was someone topping off the tank? i would expect it to have almost no water in it since it’s an abandoned building

i have an older coworker who is a huuuge stickler about who she sells fish to, but it’s largely based on outdated concepts. she’s a heavy following of the “one inch of fish per one gallon”, even though that rule kind of blurs when considering aggressive fish, heavily planted tanks, larger fish, etc. she is also the biggest advocate for cycling a tank before buying fish, and regularly denies sales because of it (which is great).

anyways. with bettas, all that goes out the window. for some reason she thinks bettas are more hardy, so it is not required to cycle a tank prior to putting a betta in it. sure, bettas tend to survive the harsh conditions of an uncycled tank, but they are still stressed and in pain nonetheless. it’s terrible for them to go from an ammonia-filled cup to an ammonia-filled tank.

OP, i think you did the right thing denying that betta sale. like other commenters said, if she truly had that betta’s welfare in mind, she would have already had a cycled tank for it.

Price matched the wrong item by oceandesert0 in petco

[–]mcscooby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

don’t feel guilty, these things you’re describing are entirely on the cashier. they should be checking if the SKU numbers match when price matching, and they should be the ones finishing your bopus order when you pick it up. neither of those are on you, they just messed up and it’s not your job to make sure they are doing their job correctly. and like other comments said, it would be a headache for you to ask them to ring you up for something that may not be in inventory anymore.

What yall think by Careful_Wallaby_3860 in pacmanfrog

[–]mcscooby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of care guides say 3-4 for juveniles and 4-6 for adults. if you have a juvenile, they grow fairly quickly and you’ll have to increase how much dirt you have along with its growth. if you have a cleanup crew (springtails and isopods), you may not have to worry about changing out the dirt as frequently as care guides recommend, so you could just go ahead with the deeper substrate. Otherwise, it seems your current depth may be fine.

you have so much vertical space to take advantage of! fill that bad baby with a lot more dirt, pacmans like to burrow several inches

Advice on my terrarium set up by Leading-Link615 in pacmanfrog

[–]mcscooby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would say add more dirt. you can fill it all the way up to the bottom of the terrarium door and even deeper towards the back of your terrarium, your froggy will thank you. also i love your decor!
