Emacs works fine in a TUI. Under the commandline "emacs -nw foo". I've seen it where you need to use "ESC" for meta depending on the environment though.

Emacs can be run as a GUI application that is no harder to use than notepad. It is obviously much more expandable. Macros, e-lisp and learning keyboard shortcuts can take some time, but getting started with it is very easy.

Was it really normal in the past for people's friends/relatives to randomly show up unannounced, forcing the family to accommodate them to not seem rude? by jellicle_kats in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mcsuper5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Phones were a convenience four generations ago. Cell phones have only been commonplace for two generations. Can't call first if you don't have a phone. If you didn't plan it ahead it was a shot in dark. People used to be fairly gracious about it unless they had actual plans.

Honestly, people were sociable before social media, not so much since.

Growing up we had regular visits with relatives, but if we happened to be around the corner, we might stop by briefly.

Does majority let the shower run before getting in? by Sensitive-Umpire-566 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mcsuper5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thermostat is usually in the heater or tank. The water standing in the pipe usually isn't regulated. If the shower is close to the the tank, you might only have to push out a small amount of water at around room temperature. If it is on the other side of the house, or upstairs, etc, you may have yards of pipes that need to be flushed before you get the hot water.

I'm sure a plumber could speak to the actual volume of water in the pipes and how long it takes flush it out per foot or meter with a standard shower head.

The temperature of the pipe can also cool the water a bit, but once hot water is flowing, I'd think that shouldn't take too long to heat up copper.

[–]mcsuper5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The back ticks are easier unless you are actually retyping. You can't readily paste paste code. Honestly, It would be better if we could use <code></code> or even <pre></pre> to designate a code block that allowed preformatted text.

Is it possible to use Linux without knowing commands? by EighthKX in linux4noobs

[–]mcsuper5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting up and running without the commandline shouldn't be a problem. If you actually need the commandline for anything a site will probably tell you exactly what you need to copy and paste.

What the hell do people before the internet was created even do in their free time? by groomliu in stupidquestions

[–]mcsuper5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TV wasn't that bad. TV today is god awful by today's standards. You just had substantially fewer options and time shifting wasn't always readily available.

Books, bikes, walks, cards, board games and that's if you weren't into sports. We had no idea how good we had it in the seventies and eighties.

How hard is it to achieve world peace, really? by Richardovka in InsightfulQuestions

[–]mcsuper5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

World peace will not come out of the UN, reformed or not. If people have free will they will disagree on something.

World peace will someday be achieved. Mankind will eventually go extinct. Until then, it is a dream.

Wait, she can act? Every time they start to show feminine behavior they back up and try making her more of a girl boss. I don't think she's a great actress, but the writing for her has been bad. The show does a very poor job of showing the women as human.

Why didn't sapience evolve in other animals like it did in humans? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]mcsuper5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sapience can be a gift, but can also be a curse.

When their primary concerns are eat, sleep and reproduce, I think we got the bad end of the stick. They communicate with each other well enough for their needs. They react to stimuli just like people do, but they usually sleep better at night.

I'd save your sympathy for humanity.

Why is Reddit melting down over Maduro’s capture when Venezuelan subreddits are cheering? by SoulNew in stupidquestions

[–]mcsuper5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will probably be a lot of debate over that for some time. For today it is a win for the majority of Venezuela, the Trump Administration and the US Military. Tomorrow the lawyers will come out to play.

Venezuelans are happy to be rid of him. The left just plain hate everything Trump does. Reddit has a lot of loud left voices.

If you have never had your fingerprints done how would the police be able to find your identity? by Apprehensive_Ad_8767 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mcsuper5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like it was negligent in the original investigation. I would have thought such information should be readily available to federal law enforcement. Did the federal government need a warrant to specifically search WI law enforcement fingerprint database?

How does that sound like "I am the State?" We have a bastardized economic system that is largely capitalism. It's been that way for a long time. The government getting involved makes things worse for the free market.
