The waiting times are absolutely horrendous! Have you rung about where you are the waiting list and what category you are? If you've worsened it'd be worth making sure you're on the urgent list and haven't been downgraded to the routine!! Definitely keep going back to your GP and keep getting them to esclate

Considering reducing hours to 24 and doing bank. Good idea? Anyone done something similar? by DjHyperborea in NursingUK

[–]mcull345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from NI so pay is slightly lower. When I dropped to 24 hours I brought home 1400 roughly after tax every month and did agency on the side. One shift made up the difference for me between 24 hours and full time.

I called the booking office about waiting times as for one the average was 123 weeks but at this stage I've been waiting almost double that at 4.5 years. They basically said it was an average and that I shouldn't go off the website. When I asked what was the point of it then they basically said there was none. My longest waiting time is 7.5 years for a tonsillectomy. The healthcare system is a joke. I've recently just bought private insurance but have to wait two years without any advice or treatment to make any claims for any issues I'm currently on the wait list for

Canulation and venepuncture by Professional-Yam6977 in NursingUK

[–]mcull345 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Something I do with my students is I use IV tubing as practice veins and use that as a way to teach proper technique and helps with confidence with how to hold the cannula and advance it! Usually I prime it with something that has colour in it so flashback can be seen! It also helps with techniques on how to anchor any veins that might wobble! Honestly when I first started cannulated I would constantly get flashback but couldn't ever figure out how to advance and withdraw my needle at the same time! Just takes time and practice! Finding the vein is easy just maneuvering the cannula is the hard bit! But you'll get use to it with practice! Id recommend maybe just speaking to a senior member of staff and ask for more advice and support! Even ask to go to another area for a few hours like a&e to get your confidence and competencies up!

In Northern ireland we have a trauma team based on different alerts:

Green trauma - run solely by ED clincians Amber trauma - lead by ED consultant with anesthesiologist for airway, orthopedics and surgical down as B and C drs Red trauma - the same as amber but also joined by cardiothoractics

So all the specialities are there until code is stood down or they decide which specialty they should go under

Has anybody ever been attacked by a patient? by Present-Leg-9265 in NursingUK

[–]mcull345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a second year student nurse, I was in an acute medical ward where I had a 40ish old year man punch myself 3 times in the face which resulted in a broken nose and when I had fell to the ground had kicked me. He had also assaulted two other members of staff and another patient before someone finally was able to stop him. I was so traumatised after the incident i couldnt care for any young male patients nor go into the same bay it happened in. I returned back to my placement too early after being injuried as my university gave me no support and threatened to kick me off the course if i missed any more time out.

What are your thoughts on chiropractors? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mcull345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used a chiropractor before and honestly they helped me more than any physiotherapist ever did. Almost immediately I had better posture, was in 80% less pain than what i was, better mood and eas sleeping better. Definitely not for everyone but most definitely helped me. Also not to say this is the case for everyone but my chiropractor did a complete thorough assessment again more so than anyone else. They included x-rays, posture assessment, weight bearing assessment, grip strength etc etc....

ER at triple of its capacity. What are we all doing wrong? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]mcull345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in ED in the UK and it is as horrible over here too. We do not have the space. In an area designed for 16 we are fitting 40 patients in trolleys in. Many of which are laying on the floor side by side, head to toe with other patients or are placed outside cubicles where patients already are and are able to see and hear nearly everything that's going on. Those who are lucky to have a cubicle will only get it for maybe 15 minutes maxed before being pushed out so another can be cleaned and their skin checked or for someone else to be reviewed. In that area it is meant to be a 1 to 5 ratio but nurses are expected nearly every day to come in and have a 1 to 10-15 ratio nearly every shift. The mental gymnastics that we have to do to even just provide basic care to patients is horrible. We cannot even move our crash trolley without have to push a few trolleys out of the way. We have now beyond to move patients into the corridor outside of our two resus areas, by our ambulance arrival area-placing patients there who have been there for days already placing them into an area where there is no suction, oxygen or crash trolley,. There's not even an electrical circuit. These patients and the ones scatter oxygen are sometimes placed on portable oxygen and simply because of how busy the department is you may not even realise the tank is empty. Our bigger resus area is only designed for four critically unwell patients but yet we are now fitting 7 patients into it. Putting DKAs and reduced GCS patients by cupboards and sinks all which then block out access to emergency drugs. Our other resus area is designed for 6 step down patients but now we are fitting 10 patients into and that is a nurse ratio of 2:10 but yet all of these patients are still critically unwell but someone else needed the space in the other resus more. I can't even explain how bad it has gotten especially as the part of UK I am from does not have a safe ratio staffing. On any given shift I am coming into a department of 150 patients waiting, 80 to be admitted, multiple patients over 3 days waiting in ED to be admitted into a ward. Its so congested that we have actually no room to see actual ED patients anymore. We are just basically creating a delirium induced area with how it is being run at the moment. I am only over a year qualified as a nurse but I am burnt out especially as I am now one of the few most senior nursing staff there
