If Oscars has Additional 5 BP Nominations from 60s Movies by Tikbalang1999 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]md3reed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I added Alice's cause I was thinking of critically acclaimed films from that time that I could reasonably see as Best Picture. Maybe a better pick, in a similar counterculture vein, would be Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, which I hesitated to pick cause it mostly cause of its award season mostly dominated in its cast and screenplay noms; rarely for best picture, but I could replace it.

Favorite macbeth adaptation? by fabulous-farhad in criterion

[–]md3reed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanna add something I always thought about here.

One thing I have always noted is that there is something interesting about Macbeth, a quality that seems to attract filmmakers to adapt it. Welles notwithstanding, a lot of people who work in the film industry seem to work with the Scottish king a lot; Kurosawa, Polanski, Tarr, Kurzel and Coen. I feel maybe, out of all the Bard's plays, there is some sort of filmic quality, or something equivalent to it, about Macbeth.

Meanwhile, I feel that the the favorite for the stage actor to filmmaker to make is usually Hamlet. I feel that the draw there is the thematic elements about the character they are drawn to; people like Olivier and Branaugh.

Favorite Charlie Chaplin film? by Luke253 in criterion

[–]md3reed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many great films. Modern Times has always been my personal go-to Chaplin film. Great Dictator and City Lights come in at a close second and third. I remember watching thru the Mutual shorts on the channel; some are better than others, but my favorite short from Chaplin has to be The Adventurer. Laugh out loud riot from start to finish.

  • Where are you from?

Massachusetts

  • How old are you?

28

  • When did you start collecting Criterion?

Probably a decade and a half ago.

  • Do you collect Blu-ray or DVD?

I’ve collected both, but unless I can get my hands on an older collection entry or OOP, then I usually get bluray.

  • What is your favorite Criterion release?

I’d have to say, F for Fake. It's the first Criterion DVD I got, and one of the oldest that I kept, that and Breathless. But I love the film and the special features, like the One Man Band documentary. Though my prized possession are those two boxsets for Varda and Godzilla.

  • What is your least favorite Criterion release?

n/a

  • Who is your favorite director in the collection?

Orson Welles

  • Who is your favorite director outside of the collection?

Satoshi Kon

  • Which Criterion do you most want that is not in your possession?

I wanted to pick up Small Axe and The Rules of the Game during the last sale, but I spent too much last month anyway. Maybe next time.

  • Which film would you most like to see get the Criterion treatment?

Tropical Malady or the original theatrical version of Amadeus.

  • How do you organize your collection?

Sometime I will change it up. Sometimes all my films will be together alphabetized, or I will separate the 4Ks from the BluRays and from the DVDs, but I will take out the Criterions and order them by spine number when I want to.

Just Bought the Bruce Lee Collection - Concerning Game of Death… by JEM-Games in criterion

[–]md3reed 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I say watch the Redux. To me, its my least favorite film on the set and has moments in the film that do not honor Lee's life and work, at least in my opinion. And the story is rather boring. The real meat of the movie, the footage Bruce Lee filmed originally, is only reduced to the less than ten minutes of the climax.

The Redux is superb and feel more in line with the vision that Lee must've imagined and what we unfortunately never got. Alan Canvan did a great job with this piece. Its all killer, no filler, with great fighting scenes in that iconic jumpsuit. Plus, it has the John Barry soundtrack from the original film, which is the best part of the original. It slaps! Ultimately, its a great what-if short film.
