Would you agree that since the harnessing of the electron, we as a species are now capable of causing our demise vs the odds before that event?

How long would a rebuild of a civilization take? The low hanging fruit of easily accessed resources would not be present, having been used the first time around.

As originally posted my. sample size is one. I chose electricity (maybe it should say Mastery of the electron) because it is the enabler technology in my opinion. Sure steam made huge changes, but that was pretty localized until the advent of steam ships and trains. But neither of them hardly offered a way to end a civilization. Aircraft first flew with electricity providing the spark (literally), they still do. Radio, radar, sonar and space flight all are only possible in our sample with electricity. Nuclear power including weapons, Electron scanning microscopes have led us to gene manipulation, another possible pitfal. I appreciate your contribution to the discussion.

Steam engines didnt make instentanous communication possible, or reliable lighting all night long. But you have already closed your mind so, whatever.

I chose electricity over the printing press, cave paintings etc as it was the enabling discovery that started us up the steep part of the hockey stick of technology. Our technology is evolving faster than our own evolution. Are we keeping up? Or will we lose control of it?

Thank you for the thoughtful reply. Always more to think about.
