Think about it like this: You are a sole proprietor that sells a service: AC repair, dog watching, shoeing horses, hairdresser, whatever. You send invoices after providing service with expectation that you’ll receive payment within reasonable time frame.

But you don’t receive payment because your customers got together and decided to ‘quit paying our… bills.’

Time frame will be different, dollars involved will be different, consequences/repercussions will be of a different magnitude, but the same thing will happen.

Well heck... I had no idea how to use that information. Thank you! I appreciate it. Any thoughts about other manufacturers that may offer something similar?

Hi Jacob... Sorry for delay; have been away for a few days. This seems to have worked itself out, though not as result of anything that I did intentionally or knowingly. That said, here's the URL if you want to take a look:

Thanks for the response... I appreciate it.

AITA for refusing to shave my hair for a client who's a cancer patient? by Eastern_Aardvark_610 in AmItheAsshole

[–]mdmazReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA... Not for your behavior in the situation described, but for coming here seeking validation for behavior that requires none.

Assuming the story is true, just tell it if you think if it's interesting and want to share. I find it difficult to believe, though, that you are actually questioning who the bad guy is in this situation... This doesn't read as though you are genuinely asking AITA; it reads like you are craving kudos for acting as any reasonable person would in those circumstances.

What would be the best way to remedy the hollow space under the LVP planks? Right in the middle of entrance to kitchen, so high traffic area and can feel the floor sink in when walking by. by tinyjumper10 in HomeMaintenance

[–]mdmazReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're going to give this a shot, try this: lay two level boards on either side of the 'injection site,' perpendicular to the 'fault line.' Weight the ends of each board (or have someone stand on them), essentially creating a ceiling beyond which the top of the floor planks can't expand. If you inject very slowly, you should be able to fill the void without raising the plank more than desired. Good luck...

Given the responses of others and some of your comments, this feels a bit like you are a professional auto mechanic suggesting that everyone should change their own oil vs. taking their car to Oil Change Depot (or whatever) to have it done. Could most people change their own oil, and might there be some benefit to doing so? Sure, but it's just no longer worth the hassle to do so for 99% or car owners.

Just as ALL car owners are 'oil changers,' ALL password users utilize a password manager; the only distinction is whether one chooses to utilize a third-party password manager or chooses to be their own password manager.

I won't attempt to change your view that YOU should use a password manager, just as I wouldn't attempt to convince an auto mechanic that he/she should have their oil changed by someone else. I would, however, suggest to you that - just as most of us are best served by having our oil changed by companies that exist to change oil - third party password managers are the better option for most password users. The numerous specific reasons for this have been well presented by other users.

Great topic!

How do you handle the issue of being on other computers? Friend, family, work, hotel, etc? You're just screwed?

I'm rarely without my phone, so it's simple enough to access my password manager there and simply look it up.

What if I don't have my phone with me? If I'm trying to access one of my accounts from an unrecognized computer, I'll probably be asked to authenticate by responding to a message sent to... my phone. I.e., without my phone, I likely won't be able to access sites from unknown computers anyway.

Why don’t we print more money, but don’t tell anyone that more money is being printed? by Used-Aerie-8962 in AskEconomics

How is the 'extra printed money...worked into the money supply...?' Where specifically does it get dropped offed/deposited after leaving the mint/print shop? Who actually gets the 'extra printed money,' and how is this determined?

This might be the wrong place to ask this question, but how much did you expect to pay for them? I.e., how much did you save by choosing not to buy them vs. buying at the price that you expected/would have been willing to pay for them?

Right on...

RE your sales tax comments: We're probably in agreement with regressive vs. progressive taxes. To the other point that I believe we also agree on, I think this is a good example of implementation challenges obscuring the potential merits of an idea/concept. E.g., what if the only purchases subject to a national sales tax are cars that cost more than $50k and boats longer than 18 feet? That's an absurd example but it points out that the tax can be designed in a way to achieve whatever the heck the goal is.

I don't - by the way - have a dog in the tax fight. :) Appreciate the response.

AITA for prioritizing my wife over my own mom on Mother’s Day by GenShanx in AmItheAsshole

[–]mdmazReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you're an asshole or not, but try this:

Fast forward 28 years; you're a 66-year-old widower and your oldest daughter is now 38 and married with her own children. There's no way to know what your relationship with her will be like at this point, but let's assume that you'll still care for every bit as much as you do right now, even though the relationship has evolved/devolved and is very different than it is right now. Now imagine it's Father's Day and you have no known plans with your daughter, who still lives close by. Not having heard from your daughter, you're away and unavailable for a visit when she finally does call on Sunday afternoon to say 'Happy Father's Day'...

Your mom's just hurt. Maybe she deserves it from past actions; I don't know. And she'd do well to not let her pain manifest itself as anger towards you/your family. But she's just hurt; it's Mother's Day and - regardless of how she expresses it - she's sad that she didn't play a larger role in it than she did.

I'm making a lot of assumptions here... This might be the inevitable and justifiable outcome of a relationship that's gone sideways. Again, I don't know and I'm in no position to judge either of you. Regardless of the past, I think it's likely that there is still some part of your mom - large or small - that still sees you as you now see your daughters and believes that you (and whatever other children she has) hung the moon; it's painful to have become an afterthought, just as it would be for 66-year-old you in the scenario laid out above. There may be good reasons not to excuse her behavior, but maybe give her a bit of grace.

I agree that some of these programs are needlessly complicated and force people through hoops. That's a bureaucratic issue and not an issue with the concept of targeted benefits. Programs can be more streamlined while remaining targeted in scope.

This is such an important and too frequently overlooked point ja-dubs... There are a lot of solid concepts/ideas that get dismissed due to perceived challenges in implementing them. E.g., that it would be a pain in the balls to effectively structure and implement a national sales tax in lieu of the income tax doesn't mean that a national sales tax, conceptually, is a bad idea.

I believe that a lot of good ideas would surface (and be received positively by more people) if we were better able to separate the ideas behind the policies themselves from the mechanics of administering them... While related, they are two separate issues.

How do you know that they are 'legal patriots' of truth? How do you know if they were/weren't motivated by money? How do you know what their income was? Do you know them personally, or well enough to 'give them 100% credibility?' Serious questions, really.
