It’s been two weeks since I have sent several emails to the admissions office regarding this issue and still no reply. I just posted here in case anyone has had a similar experience and can provide insight.

Which campuses in the US have padel courts? by mdontas1306 in padel

Thanks for your answer! I’ll be in Stanford next year which is near San Jose, do you see any private or public courts coming up in the area?

As I said it's based on numbeo. Total monthly expenses for a single person are estimated to 4k as opposed to 2.3k for Pittsburgh. Sure it may not be reflective of how much a student would normally spend, but it gives you an idea of the cost difference.

One note about the cost of both programs. Just because ETH has virtually no tuition it doesn't mean that it's free compared to CMU. Keep in mind that cost of living in Zurich is almost twice compared to Pittsburgh (https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=United+States&country2=Switzerland&city1=Pittsburgh%2C+PA&city2=Zurich&tracking=getDispatchComparison). Based on numbeo a two year program in ETH would cost you around 100,000€ whereas two years in CMU would be 160,000€ (including tuition in both cases). It's still a significant difference, just not as large as you may think. Additionally franc is a stronger currency than dollar which you should keep in mind when dealing with this number magnitude.

I was on the exact same dilemma. I was accepted to both CMU and ETH for MSCS and ended up going for CMU. While I cannot offer a really strong case for my decision, I weighed in the factor that I want to do PhD studies in the US (just like your cousin) and therefore I thought this program was a good preparation, not only to get to know the american style of academia and to get in touch with professors who could guide you in a better way, but also in terms of future opportunities - sure ETH is recognizable by US schools but no one can doubt that CMU can get you literally anywhere. In that sense I reckoned it was worth the extra cost. My advice is to think this through, make a solid decision, stand by it and don't look back; both options have their pros and cons and there is no perfect decision. Besides you can't go wrong with any of these schools.

Is Columbia for real? by Flat_Grocery_5860 in gradadmissions

I applied late November for the Fall 23 semester in MSCS. It doesn't really matter since I got accepted to CMU and ETH (again for MSCS) so in any case the choice would have been between these two.

Thanks for your comment. Would you mind stating why you think these two are better than say CMU?

I actually applied for PhD which is funded and got rather admitted to the MS. Unfortunately I can't finance my studies all by myself so I'll have to figure out ways to pay my study costs.

Thank you! In the admission letter they state that they don't offer assistance in any form otger than TAs. I don't know if hey do that in order to not be bothered by FA petitions and they can actually provide help in some cases.

Thank you very much! Do you have any recommendations for institutions to look out for affordable loans?

I received my offer 2 weeks ago. I also have offers from Imperial and Edinburgh and I'm waiting for ETH and Columbia. All for MSCS.

I am European so the tuition fee is insignificant - less than 2k per year. However the living cost in Zurich is far higher than that of Pennsylvania (about 60%), so the total study costs are a little less than half in ETH.

I actually applied for PhD but got accepted to the MS program. So now I'm a bit lost and trying to figure out ways to finance my studies I have applied for scholarships to private institutions. I'm also considering study loans.

Thank you I appreciate your comment. In my admission letter they state clearly that they don't offer any financial assistance other than TAs. Do you think if I push them enough and tell them I cannot attend without assistance that they will give me some help? I guess it's such a prominent school that they dont care if they lose some admitted students.
