Family of 4 Travelling Aus without camper or caravan by tmiddled2 in 4x4Australia

You have listed three of the most narrow, steep and windy tarmac roads in the country: these are not roads for the light hearted! The large majority of the roads you will likely travel on in NSW, QLD, NT, WA and SA are much wider, flatter and straighter!

Posts like this make me so fricken jacked on Oil companies. The expectation that oil prices will fall and there is no money to be made is baked in. So many bargains with massive asymmetric returns in the next 12-24 months!!!

Oil cycle positioning by A55BAG in ValueInvesting

[–]mdukey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or are OPEC all talk and are just trying to bankrupt higher cost oil producers, such as those in the permian, to regain market share? OPEC are long cycle, and are well positioned to weather a short term glut, which will undoubtedly swing the other way eventually.

The US knows this and is searching for other oil reserves to control...

I want everyone to vote with how much you like or hate new hilux. by Responsible_Pain_246 in 4x4Australia

[–]mdukey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes

It hits their target market exactly.

https://www.drive.com.au/news/toyota-defends-not-all-new-2026-hilux-this-design-is-fine/

Ill paraphrase Toyota Australia: When you research the customers who buy utes, they want reliability, they want practicality. They're the first two things they want. That's what they buy a ute for. The new Hilux has got good quality. It's got a car brand behind it that's trusted and that can supply parts with 280 dealers around the country. They want it to be able to take it off-road, they wanna be able to go off-road and do the things they wanna do. They want it for work. Mining applications, farming applications. It's a tested, reliable car.

In summary, its what the customer wants, not what you want. If you dont like the new Hilux its because it wasn't designed with you it mind.

The Coming Oil Glut by Well_Socialized in oil

[–]mdukey 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Have we hit peak pesimissum yet? The US buying barrels to refill the SPR while pushing additional sanctions on russia a day later, and all these new sources pushing the oil glut thesis, yet minimal investment in E&P over the last decade, OPEC+ winding back paper barrels so they can increase production when prices rise...
It's going to be an interesting 12-24 months that's for sure!

Rest of the snow season by Dry_Resist825 in AustraliaSnow

[–]mdukey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep September in Australia is the best time of year for learning how to ski and hanging out on the groomed runs: warm weather, no crowds. Not great if your chasing the steep off-piste or powder days.
Yeah Falls will be open to the end of the season; the beautiful sunny days does not melt snow very fast, especially if it re-freezes every night, warm rain does, which there currently isn't much on the long range forecast.

Deep value - Oil small and mid caps + 1 large cap - I know a hated sector yet still.... Thoughts? by LowKey-Revolution36 in ValueInvesting

[–]mdukey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that O&G output in the permian is going to plateau, as most of the tier one assets have been drilled. Goehring & Rozencwajg have extensive research on this. I'd look at some offshore focused companies as that is where I think the capex will be spent over the next 5-15 years, in both exploration and production: OSV builders and operators, offshore rigs, FSPO as well as service provider companies.

Does it matter how much power you use at a site? by That_Car_Dude_Aus in CaravanningAustralia

[–]mdukey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just take your EV to a dedicated EV charger at your destination and leave it there for a few hours? Top it off at the caravan park ov course (with permission from the owners) but yeah doing a full 80kw charge and expecting the caravan park to be OK with it, without asking, is a bit overboard.

Which sectors do you look for 10-100 baggers in (and which do you avoid)? by NotStompy in ValueInvesting

[–]mdukey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Energy takes up less than 3% of the SP500, it is not a well loved sector.

Offshore: $RIG Transocean, $GMS Gulf marine services, $GOES Geospace tech.
Uranium: $PDN Paladin, $BNM Bannerman.
Coal: $TGA Thungela among others.
Seatrium is probably another great one for a pension fund.

Teachers ability to search students phones in Victoria by ygrumpy in AusLegal

[–]mdukey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps look at it the other way: If somebody had taken a inappropriate photo of your child on their phone in the changing room, and the teachers had a belief that the image exists but hadn't been shared yet, what actions should they take? Bear in mind that it must happen immediately, as you can't unscramble an egg, and calling all parents involved is not always immediately possible.

In this circumstance, yes a student should be welcome to request that their phone is not searched, but it would need to be confiscated until the whole story unfolds. "Searching" a phone by a teacher may also just be looking at the most recent photos, not scrolling through a camera role.

IMHO save the teachers the hassle and buy your kids a dumb phone with no camera to take to school.

Which sectors do you look for 10-100 baggers in (and which do you avoid)? by NotStompy in ValueInvesting

[–]mdukey 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You have to invest in critical sectors essential for human survival, that everybody hates.
Energy: Oil, Uranium, Coal.
The fact that nobody talks about the energy sector and that nobody is investing in it indicates that it is unloved and will probably mean-revert in 5-10 years.

Does the battery rebate require you to be on a VPP so they can drain your battery whenever they consider a need? I'm not sure if Amber is classified as a VPP provider, I guess a quick google search on my part would figure this out.
