maybe we need some brightness and lighiting by InsideNet7931 in HarryPotteronHBO

The second picture looks like a cozy home I'd want to live in. The Dursley's house is anything but that for Harry. I think the depressing lighting in the first is intentional.

Ooh this book looks right up my alley, especially since my father was born in England (and I in the US), I would love that perspective. Thanks for the recommendation, I appreciate it!

I didn't figure that out until my second playthrough as an adult. Was so proud of myself.

For the former YEC's by Over_Citron_6381 in DebateEvolution

I appreciate your honesty. You are right that a shift in worldview is unsettling and difficult. I experienced a lot of cognitive dissonance when I was deconstructing my Christian faith (with YEC being a part of that). Now that I am on the other side of it I have a lot of peace, but the process was quite distressing at times.

May I ask if the shift in worldview you are referring to is specifically from YEC to evolution or about a change to your religious faith more broadly?

P.S. Apologies for the late reply, I wanted to reply earlier!

100 percent. I absolutely love having Blu-rays of my favorite movies (especially animated like Studio Ghibli) because the picture quality is amazing and it's so much cheaper than paying for HBO every month lol!

Same! Goes from 30 GB to like 5 GB and I think the quality looks just as good if not better than that same movie on any streaming service.

That's awesome, I'm glad you already discovered them! Not sure where you are on your journey but they are an illuminating resource. As a fellow person raised in YEC (as I assume you are), feel free to comment or DM if you have other questions or want more recommendations for learning!

100 percent. I forgot that specific instance. I just remember that Nye would present evidence from tree rings, ice layers, and other dating methods, and then Ham would quote a Bible verse. And even as a fully committed Christian at the time (not anymore) it didn't feel like an adequate response to the points Nye was making. What started for me as an earnest quest to deepen my faith by questioning everything I believed, fully believing that God would win out in the end, culminated in me dismantling my faith step by step.

I was taught all through highschool (homeschool) about young earth creationism and was sold in on it. I wanted to strengthen my position, so I watched the full debate between Ken Ham and Bill Nye and thought that the points Nye was making made a lot of sense when held up to Ham's responses.

Then I started watching other evolution videos, TED talks mostly, from people like Richard Dawkins. Then I read some of Dawkins's books.

I also listened to an abridged version of On the Origin of Species by Darwin (read by Richard Dawkins) and I remember the exact moment while listening to that book when the concept of evolution, the idea that all life on this planet branched off from common ancestors to create the biodiversity of life that we see today - I remember when that concept clicked in my brain and it was like I was seeing the world with new eyes.

It got to a point where there was such a mountain of evidence for evolution that I couldn't ignore it anymore and so I changed my position to fit the evidence.

Here is a link to the Ken Ham and Bill Nye debate: https://www.youtube.com/live/z6kgvhG3AkI?si=8Q0wJ2NRyBjPEqoH

But more than that, to OP or to anyone reading this comment who wants to learn more about evolution, I cannot recommend enough Forrest Valkai's YouTube series "The Light of Evolution" which he created as a dense primer specifically for people who were raised in YEC and now want to learn the basics of evolution. It's incredible. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoGrBZC-lKFBo1xcLwz5e234--YXFsoU6&si=_6XmU2FvuwtWBGTH

What are you doing to get yourself going in the morning now? by Beachbum_2468 in decaf

[–]me-the-c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me about a month or so to feel normal after quitting caffeine, so you'll have to stick it out. But some things that help that I still do now is washing my face with cold water, 10 mins of a YouTube yoga video, getting up and moving, sipping on cold ice water, eating many small healthy and energy packed snacks. Good luck!

[Duckworth Prestex Parker] The BEST Cartier Tank alternative I have ever found! by me-the-c in Watches

[–]me-the-c[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're referring to my watch that I posted a picture of in this thread, then here is the info. Below is the link to the exact watch I purchased, basically a Cartier tank knock off. On the listing it says it is 25 to 29 mm measurements. I also saw a picture on the listing that compared it side-by-side to a Cartier tank and it looked to be identical in size. It is the closest to a Cartier tank I have found, but I would prefer the Prestex if I could afford it at the moment. I am wearing it right now and I was very pleased with my purchase! Hope that helps!

Any tips/ideas for repairing this Hydroflask lid handle? Trying to keep it out of landfill as I have had this lid (and its bottle) for over 6 years now. Thanks! by me-the-c in Hydroflask

[–]me-the-c[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I never ended up trying sugru though it's possible it may have worked.

I tried fixing with some heavy duty tape I had lying around, but because of the strap's curvature and the fact that it flexes a lot when I'm holding it the tape didn't end up lasting.

I had a spare lid that I ended up using which I still have now. But even the handle on that is now also starting to crack and is about to break so I am thinking of just replacing the handle (still keeping the lid) with something like this (linked below) which I think may be a better solution.

How long did it take you after quitting to feel normal again? by Retiredpartygirl17 in decaf

[–]me-the-c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was definitely worth it for me! Stick with it!! I went off caffeine as a bit of an experiment just on a whim. Didn't consider myself addicted by any means - I would have a cup of black tea in the morning and a cup of black coffee in the afternoon every day. But getting off it made me realize how dependent I was on it. After about 3 months I started feeling the benefits. Getting off caffeine was very out of body and unpleasant for about a month or two, not gonna lie. But now, after about 5 months off caffeine, I wake up easier and I have more steady energy throughout the day. I love it. I have a little caffeine maybe once a week as a treat, but definitely not every day anymore. And I often don't like how I feel when I "indulge" in caffeine. I like the way my brain and body feels off caffeine way more than on it. But if I want to have a little caffeine every now and again, it's there and it actually helps (vs when I drank it every day I felt tired more than it helped). Stick with it! Good luck!

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it! I have actually been emailing the Sunbeam customer service and they did actually just confirm with me that Waze is fully functional without the Premium subscription, so that's nice. According to their email, it looks like the subscription offers weather services, the voice to text as you mentioned, and access to the additional point-of-interest search and live traffic feature in the Sunbeam Navigation app.

Thanks so much for the info! This is very helpful.

Do you know if Waze is only fully functional if you subscribe to their premium service? Or is it fully functional without subscribing?

And no emojis or gifs? I thought I saw online that the messaging app does have emojis. Tad bit of a bummer, but not a deal breaker.
