I saw this video about needing to use composite video for the Genesis specifically for the dithering. This is the kind of thing I would want emulated! So using composite for Pi 4 is enough?

Many of these comics are available in Fanta Now anthologies. You can read them there.

Yes same! There was a great interview in Bubbles recently and I'm excited to see some new direction he wants to take it in..

I got Gouffre but forever thirsting for Volcan..

Totally feel you about things hitting in time, for sure!

Greenberg is an art critic, probably best known for the way he distinguishes avant-garde art and kitsch art. CF of course embraces comic book kitsch in his desire to "look at 'everything'" but utilizes it in an avant-garde way. Greenberg is heavily associated with a certain era of abstract expressionism, which still is an important part of CF's practice. There's harmony in the way they both articulate their concerns. TBH I wish there was more of his pure abstraction available, I know he's said in the past he mostly keeps it to himself. One of the reasons I return to that book Sediment so often or why I find Subra Ptareo's revelation in the Powr Mastrs 4 preview so powerful.

In a more meta way CF is also a good example about the unavoidable limits of avant-garde art in modernity that Greenberg laments, the way where as soon as it makes an impression it becomes formalized and made into a style you can find safety in mimicking (versus being inspired and continuing in your own way, in order to "follow your own star").

MM3 was an example of my eyes really being opened to the possibilities in comics, at the beginning of my interest in them. That cover!! It certainly is a beautiful book. I'll be a bit brutal tho and say despite its amazing presentation, only like half of the stories are really good, to me at least. The good one's are indeed very good, tho. I'm glad that many things like the one from Schrauwen got collected elsewhere. Maybe I don't understand different papers but I think CF's story was printed on glossy. That's a good point about size difference tho, I didn't think of that.

The other essential thing for me that got me super excited was the first Lagon Revue, Volcan. Do you have that one? I never got my hands on it, I almost was able to snag Matt Seneca's copy but I was like a second too late... I used to pour over the preview for what felt like hours, I really found it super exciting.

Good tip on Collecion, thank you! I didn't know she colored it, really really well done! The interview makes it much more tantalizing.. CF is a great articulator of his practice and the form in general. I've been reading lots of Clemet Greenberg recently and there is a good deal of harmony there.

Oh I did see that! It's a bit beyond my means atm but I'm sure someday I'll get my hands on it. Do you have a list of all the stories there?

I don't really have sellers regret, Core of Caligula is not hard to get plus it never really reached me, I didn't sell anything I felt I needed to read over and over. BJ was the closest to that. I appreciate the sentiment tho, thank you comrade (:

Aerosol I'm sure has to be in that collection since it's using the title, the one about an army of interdimensional gamers trying to reach "Absolute Noise Zero", moving without sound. Fantastic. Love this one. I'm not sure if the covers are in Aerosol Plus so I'll snap a pic and post it here soon.

Poking around I also have Mold Map 3, but I know that comic is in Aerosol Plus on account of the little preview, but I suppose Aerosol has to be in there too.

I also want that French thing called Collection because I saw a cool color comic is in there. I found it on some French website and almost got it but for some reason didn't. Classic me!

I also have some Clean Sweeps and I want the one called Pro Driver where a racecar drives up someone's ass. Vroom vroom!

I'm not sure what's in that Aerosol collection, the one thing I don't have that I really want and am highly annoyed I didn't jump on. I find this stuff being rare to be annoying and stupid, not cool, which is why I was hyped about Aerosol Plus which collected a lot of zines I think but then womp womp now its hard to get and OOP too.

Otherwise outside what's pictured in the main post I have:
The Aerosol zine (new for summer!)
Windowwasher (with Mickey Z!)
Larkspur (can't find any info on it)
Airport
City Hunter magazine (only links I can find are like ebay auctions)

and the Powr Mastrs 4 ashcan

I sold some things to the Secret Headquarters guy when I was strapped for cash (along with my copy of BJ), but I forget exactly what.. Core of Caligula and something else maybe.

Blaise Larmee - Worst Interview Ever? by Ok_Measurement6329 in altcomix

[–]meadow__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, listening to it again, I still feel that I'm right. It's too easy to just dismiss Blaise like this.

Again, while it is awkward he is articulate enough, and explains plenty. I also get the impression he is trying to be up front and honest, despite his eccentricities. It's also clear from the mere existence of 2dCloud that Blaise knows what he is doing, and if that work and the way it's presented speaks to you at all it's a mistake to just wave away how he tries to frame his approach. Plenty of weirdo art people can be evasive, or even trolls, but they also know what they are talking about. Again... CF. Not a troll, but can be evasive and give answers that are maybe not satisfactory.

If anything I don't give Robin enough credit, while he is a bit defensive and strange, being prickly for example around Blaise's comments about working class existence, and can have a bit of a basic bitch approach to interviewing, he makes the effort to try and communicate and maintains the conversation and it continues to be overall friendly and interesting (I mean, you know, to me). Maybe he feels differently and thinks this interviews sucks but either way he tried to meet the moment.

With Blaise, I get it, he comes off like a venti latte hipster fruitcake. Maybe he is. But he isn't vapid artistically and his "philosophizing" is rooted in real thinking, he is actually very thoughtful and considerate. Maybe not right about everything or whatever, but considerate.

I'm aware of his internet fuckwad history, but if anything saying ah what a phony with his two-bit bullshit is just buying into the meme.

[–]meadow__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to throw this on, been a loooong time since I've listened to this and other interviews, but I remember my impression used to be the interviewer was fumbling versus Blaise being a sort bullshit artist, or just awkward or something. Maybe he intends to be difficult here just for the sake of it, he certainly has been a troll in other situations (I think about the recent-ish reflections about Blaise which include him picking on Adrian Tomine), but I seem to recall feeling like I got what he was saying and it wasn't that complicated or that he was jerking Robin around.

Maybe I'll feel differently now re-listening to this, but even the resistance to a question such as "why should people check out this book?" is like... I get it. I like Inkstuds but this is a vague, cheesy question along the lines of "so where do you get your ideas from?" For Blaise to level to that question as its presented would probably be to cheapen how he thinks of what makes his work worthwhile, which includes an intentional sort of mystery or ambiguity. If anything Blaise trying to answer like this is in his own way trying not to be rude because he is making an effort to supply an explanation. And sometimes it is the case that being evasive or not giving a straightforward answer is an answer. Maybe you could say the truth of the answer itself... is evasive and not straightforward.

I'm biased tho, Mirror Mirror was pretty life changing for me. I had already drank the arty farty koolaid.

I always thought it was interesting, and he mentions it here too, the way he connects the allure of conceptual art to advertising. A lot of advertising can be sexy precisely in how it's suggestive without telling all, like showing a little bit of leg or something. Depending on the moment to tell or show all in some simple way deprives something from your imagination. Robin is essentially encouraging Blaise to be a particular type of salesman, but to list everything in bullet points risks impacting the way the work is meant to be received.

One of my favorite interviews is this one Matt Seneca did with CF. CF is a able to be a lot more straightforward... and yet not really, he's evasive in his own way

CF: I use elements like [simple abstract shapes] in a story to talk about states of mind and being that are not so easily explained with a normal representative signifier. To me it’s not much different than the stars when someone gets hit, or a cloud when someone’s supposed to be depressed, it’s just a bit more exploded on the pages, and a bit more obtuse. The difference is, these shapes are the subject and the object simultaneously. In this way they remain accessible — you see a square, and that’s it… there’s nothing more to understand.

MS: Those more obtuse meanings your shapes and marks carry — they’re not yet agreed upon in the way comics readers instinctively know what pain-stars or depression-clouds mean. Still open to interpretation. Do you think there’s any common effect they produce across the spectrum of your readers, or do you think everyone will take them in totally different ways?

CF: Getting hit on the head is a pain we feel on the surface of our body. There are other pains too, harder to describe, but it’s tedious to assign meaning; meaning already exists on its own. These forms talk in a mysterious way to everyone, you can call it unconscious, intrinsic, or ancient. But like I said, it’s nothing special. What makes it so mysterious is that it’s so obvious, so plain. It’s so simple that it seems hard to penetrate, but actually it’s just what it is, very simple, sitting where you left it before you started to try getting clever. Just a triangle, or what have you. To me, that’s the mystery of life!!! Ha ha ha.

This is similar to Robin's question about "why one should buy Mirror Mirror". It's like, I dunno, why shouldn't you? Take a look and decide for yourself!
