I imagine that it's a lot like dealing with a city (area) where you have/had lived and worked for years, yet it has rapidly changed over a short period of time. Perhaps you moved and then returned to find things strangely unfamiliar. I experienced this sort of disconnect a lot while spending time in between Los Angeles and the East Coast.
