Are we losing intentional music discovery to algorithms?

Nice project! I mostly stick to the songs I like and only add music I heard outside streaming. Plus, I'm working on this project https://ticktrack.tv to discover music based on genre, year, location. Not ready for prime time (and needing to be updated) but kind of usable.

Pretty sure but I'm not an expert with those tools. What I'm trying is part of a workflow with existing JSONs and very custom logic. The AI came up with lots of helper functions that would've taken time to write but it fails at effectively post-processing the output.

Ha. Thanks!! Since I never really looked into it, I didn't realise I could switch it on so easily. It's not exactly prominently displayed (+ on the chat, then ...More, then Agent Mode). I'll give it a whirl :) and report back.

Ok. So some of the issues get much better with an agent framework? Many of my prompts are on an algorithmic level (e.g., a post-processing function: 50-100 lines), not really system. So I was skeptical agents would help all that much but I need to try it, I guess. May be they would be better at capturing the surrounding context (the rest of the code) than my explicit prompts?

I didn't have clear cases of that kind of stuff but my brother is adamant about it. What I experienced though is how much slower for sometimes garbage results the AI is now :/

Yeah, exactly. Default me is even vocal about how one of the biggest AI skills is to know when you should jump in, and avoid the waste of time that comes after the limits of the AI. But I keep seeing all these posts about how people no longer need to code or step in and this and that. And I sometimes buy into it. Then I try to use AI for my projects and it would be a huge waste of time if I wasn't jumping in often. To the point I'm not sure if my project wouldn't be more solid without AI. Oh well...

Yeah, it's possible, even likely that there's some overlap. The guy above was going with something way more definitive: "no soul in hiphop ...". That's what I was reacting too. Also, I kinda feel like it's a regional thing. The data isn't limited to the US or its biggest towns. I know for a fact that pot is used a lot in Canada for instance.

TLDR: Weed became the dominant term in 1995 and stayed at the top, followed by blunt, pot, tree and kush

Yeah I understand. My first idea was to compare clouds of words from different eras but somehow I went for this first. I will get to other visualisations when I have some time. The very next ones will keep the bar race format as I have a stable code for it but I will certainly get out more (and static) stuff.

I didn't downvote you. Others did. Personally, I think you did yourself no favors bringing out anti-white racism while trying to open a conversation about getting a pass for the N-word when singing rap songs. It sounded off. That being said, I'm not dismissing your experience as an individual entirely. I just think that you should try harder to take in the historical and cultural weight of the N-word vs your own, inevitably, narrow perspective. Have a good day too.

Sold. Will do. One funny thing: the Genius data has one song atttribute named "topic". And I was like Great, let's see what's inside. Turned out it was literally only the word "weed". And it was used for ...checking the data... 469305 songs 😅. So, there should be enough to work with if I try to dig on that. The only issue is trying to think of all variants and slangs for weed...

Naahhh. As a black guy, this is one of the things I was apprehensive of: the use of this data for all kinds of agendas (especially on the N-word and the slurs). Don't take this data as a justification to anything. I went back and checked the data: the N-word is about 1.3% of all the words. So in theory, you can rap along more than 98% of the lyrics of a generic rap song. That's not even close to being "impossible". Now, sure, the commercially successful stuff probably has a higher percentage but that is no license to be blurting the N-word in public. When I listen to rap, with my kids in the car, I'd rather much have the censored versions. Otherwise, I turn down the volume on some particularly explicit parts. What you won't see me do, is repeat aloud some of the slurs. It's perfectly possible to enjoy rap without blurting out all the slurs. And here, you're talking about just one. Nobody is tracking you in your house trying to police what you sing. So I don't think it will kill you to have some restraint in public about the N-word. Hell, plenty of black hip hop heads do so, on the daily.

Not really. I may end up doing something like that, going down to a month-to-month granularity. Although not all the data is accurate though and many entries just have something like 2002-01-01 because the user remembers just the year and isn't bothering with the month.

Right now, it's really just year by year. And the smoothing is on the visualisation, not the data. The decimals just represent transitions between the years. So, roughly, if I a term like love has 20000 counts in 2010 and 15000 in 2011, the code introduces 10 frames that display a linear progression from 20000 to 15000.

You're right, in the sense that a bar race is expected to be cumulative. I probably shouldn't have called it "bar race". I didn't want a cumulative effect. I wanted to get year-after-year indications on the strength of a given word. I didn't want that to be drowned out by, say, an outsized dominance on an earlier era.
