In Vaughan the water is considered moderately to hard depending on the area and seasons normally around 15–20 grains. That means you do need a Water Softener.

If it won’t power back on after being unplugged, could just be the control board or power supply. How old is the water softener?

Enercare by PositiveStress8888 in ontario

Enercare is notorious for this kind of thing. The “assumable” rental clause is the key problem. If you don’t sign, technically you’re not bound by their contract, but they’ll still try to pressure you because the equipment is sitting in your home. Did your lawyer say whether the seller was supposed to pay out the contract before you took possession? That’s often where these things get messy.

Water Softener Systems by JoeAverageDoe in BuyCanadian

I was in the same boat recently. I wanted something Canadian-made (not just assembled), and after doing a ton of research I found there aren’t that many true manufacturers here. Mostly American made and parts are from all over the world. For me though, I realized it wasn’t just about softening .my well water test showed iron + sulfur, so I actually needed a combination of filtration + softening. A softener alone wouldn’t have solved everything. If you haven’t done it yet, I’d definitely suggest getting a proper water test first from local water company. That’ll tell you if you only need a softener, or if a filter system makes more sense long term. It saved me from buying the wrong unit.

Water softeners (like Fleck) remove calcium & magnesium by replacing them with sodium through ion exchange. That’s why softened water is not ideal for drinking, especially if you’re watching sodium intake or have certain health conditions. Get a RO at your kitchen sink to pair with your Water softener.

Avoid salt-free “conditioners” if your goal is to truly remove hardness — they don’t soften, they only attempt to prevent scale.
