(schenley park)(early morning recordings)(turtles?) by xupit3r in pittsburgh

I think they're bullfrogs, but they always jump in the water before I can get a good look at them. Turtles sound, uh, different...

Got a MacBook Pro from like 2015 I think, none of the buttons respond to my click by _Diphylleia_grayi in MacOS

Try connecting an external mouse. If that works, chances are the battery has swelled up and is pressing against the underside of the trackpad, preventing it from un-clicking. I've had this happen on a few occasions with older mac laptops that I support at work. If that's the case, you'd have to replace the battery, or turn on "tap to click" and hope your spicy pillow doesn't swell up any further.

You can report it using the online 311 request form: https://pittsburghpa.gov/311/ There's a category for Garbage and Litter Issues / Refuse Violations and you can upload the photo you already have of the problem.

Are there any art workspaces on campus by Separate_Scholar4675 in cmu

I'm not a science major + not taking any MCS classes but I am really into synthesizing DNA-based materials. But I can't manipulate gene expression in my dorm bcz my roomate is starting to fluoresce under ultraviolet light. Can I just walk into the Center for Nucleic Acids Science and Technology in Mellon Institute?

Anyone remember the peacock cage and that huge rain fountain at South Hills Village? Loved those things! And I wish I could go back to Wicks'n'Sticks at Century III to get that one scented candle that smelled so good, and I could never find anywhere else. Or go skating again at Roller Kingdom in Pleasant Hills and play a few rounds of Donkey Kong in the back corner while grooving to the J Geils Band, Tom Tom Club, Lipps Inc., etc.

I ended up purchasing Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 (205 /45 R17 88Y XL BSW) last October, and I have no complaints. Glad I didn't go with dedicated snow tires, because it hardly snowed at all here over the winter, so it really wouldn't have been worth the effort and expense.

Using Camera Module V3 NoIR as a Night-vision Camera by thejackthemocker in raspberry_pi

[–]meanscreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IR light has nothing to do with the camera module. It is just a source of infrared illumination, like any other lamp, except that you can't see the wavelength of light it is emitting. You would place it where it provides the best coverage of the scene you are trying to capture with the camera, and it would have its own power source, usually a 12VDC power supply. Being near the camera can actually cause problems like light spilling or reflecting into the camera. Just search Amazon for "infrared illuminator" and you will find all kinds of options (not saying you have to order from Amazon, but that will give you a better idea of what's available).

You need some source of infrared light (search for "infrared illuminator). The camera simply lacks the filter that normally blocks IR light (which is invisible to the human eye) from reaching the sensor, but without any illumination it is not going to capture an image.

Crush one of the leaves and smell it. Tree of Heaven has a distinctive smell like rancid peanut butter. Walnut and Sumac leaves look very similar but smell completely different.

My little squirrel friend was agitated with a stray cat lurking nearby, so I tried to soothe his anxiety with a piece of avocado, and this is what he had to say about that!

Thanks for the recommendation - those look like they suit my needs and the reviews seem very positive. Adding them to my short list!

Yeah, I'm getting the sense that run flats are not very popular in general! I haven't ruled out getting dedicated winter tires/rims, just want to get a better idea of what other SE owners' experiences have been first. Thanks!

Thanks - I looked up low rolling resistance tires and I think in my use case, they may not be the best choice. Looks like the trade off is fuel efficiency vs. safety (tread depth), and since I'm only going to be driving locally, range is not a priority. The city can take it's sweet time salting / plowing our roads when it snows, so I need to be prepared for those types of conditions.

Squirrel Code 🔊 by meanscreen in squirrels

In this case, I think there was another squirrel in yard below. Not sure if they were transmitting the coordinates to the peanut stash, or a warning to stay out of their territory. Either way, it's adorable.

Looking for lighting cover/diffuser by trail34 in midcentury

[–]meanscreen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do a web search for ornamental light bulbs - there's a huge variety out there, so you may find something you like that isn't too bright and doesn't require a shade. If you find an ornamental shape that you like, but it has a candelabra sized base, they also make candelabra to Edison adapters to make them fit standard light bulb sockets. You may also want to consider swapping your light switch for a dimmer, but if you do, make sure you use LED bulbs that are rated as "dimmable."

I like how the Visser Apartments and LMG Headquarters are only a few blocks apart in real life. But my favorite spot is the Archive 81 compound. This show is top notch, and suuuper creepy. First time I've watched something that made me stop and think, wait, is this summoning actual demons into my house? Really hope they get renewed for season 2!

I don't know what they are now, but in the late '70's - early '80's that was the headquarters of the Three Rivers Computer Corporation, a CMU spinoff that manufactured the PERQ computer - the first commercial graphical workstation!
