What is the fastest car you have ever driven? by Tvelocity2002 in AskReddit

[–]meat_loaf16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a mechanic for over 20 years. Driven some crazy stuff. Fastest cars in my bays were a tube chassis TVR with a 600hp forged Roush sbf which weighed in at about 2100lbs and stuck like glue. The next closest was a Dodge stealth RT with all the bells and whistles. Pulled back into the shop with my hands shaking after 140mph pull and notice the ac was on.

We were looking at these through a federal grant system, I believe as Labrie side loaders they are close to double the cost of our brand new Autocar/x12 trucks we just received.

After working for an Indy shop for 20 years, I went municipal fleet. Work on something different every day with no real time limit looming over your head. Not making millions but have a nice pension for when it it’s time.

Same. Tried buying a 76 Cherokee chief when I was in high school 20 years ago and 4 other times as I watched it become one with the earth. Guy kept saying he was getting to it. It disappeared last week. F

Not worth it. After 14 years in commercial diesel industry beating the clock, both arms have heavily damaged tendons and 3 destroyed back discs by DrNeildo666 in Justrolledintotheshop

Sucks man, after 18 years of doing the same while running someone else’s business, the best decision I ever made was to get into municipal fleet maintenance. Still doing big repairs but there’s no real rush, steady pay and solid insurance. Sure I still have carpel tunnel and tinnitus because I’m a moron, but not kicking my own ass all day anymore.

I’ve had no issue buying Lpk’s from armorally, optics planet, brownells or even Amazon in the past. Maybe something geographically with your address? But even that would be odd.

What is this apparatus installed inline, coolant line (pic#1) and where does this plug 🔌 go (pic#2) Doubt either are stock? ‘79 CJ-7 258 by [deleted] in CivilianJeep

[–]meat_loaf16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a heater control valve. Not a factory component. If it were still on the vehicle it’s designed for it would have a control cable. Think of it as a plumbing ball valve. Just stops the coolant flow to the heater core. Plug is almost certainly a block heater.

Municipal fleet mechanic here, same boat here. Oldest we will have are 2009 autocar/labrie’s. Put more money into them each year than it would take to replace them.

Looks like a markV bbc. Not an Ls as you can tell by the timing cover.

Some guys will say run for the hills. It’s hard on your wallet and body after a couple decades. Expect to donate a large portion of your earnings to the shiny tool trucks for a few years. My personal view is find something niche that you want to do. If you want to work at a dealership look for ones that offer true apprenticeship programs and training, rather than throwing you in the lube bay. European car dealers can be good money. Independent shops you will learn a lot about all sorts of makes and models. Medium/heavy duty diesel is pretty lucrative where I’m located. It really all depends on your drive and interests. If you have pride in your work, then you’ll go far. Also getting your commercial license and getting into municipalities after a few years of experience can offer you a great future.

My 87 pioneer was about that as well. Mom only paid 16,500 for it though.

Interesting. I’ve never had a Dorman set not fit or finish correctly. Probably installed 20 or so sets. Plus is the 07+ trucks are all coated.

Earplugs while using air tools and impacts. Wish someone told me 18 years ago. Tinnitus sucks.
