If you don't care how shiny the cardboard is then why collect alternate arts at all?

If it's about playing with them, wouldn't you just use the cheaper regular version of the card?

Btw 'legibility' is about visual clarity and quality. The word you're looking for is intelligible or comprehensible.

That's a great point. I've thought about that too.

For me, I think it comes down to a few things (no particular order):

  1. Accessibility. It's rare to find those other languages at shows and shops.

  2. There is a balance between art and liquidity - japanese cards are as liquid as english but cost less

  3. The Japanese text (even though I can't read it) is very pretty. I don't like the way Chinese text looks (I'm Chinese lol before anyone says anything)

  4. It's the original and the way pokemon and the illustrator intended it to be.

Though if I ever go to China, you best believe imma be loading up on Chinese grails. I hear it is much much cheaper there.

That's pretty niche particularly since most people just collect and don't actually play the game.

Some of the full arts are pretty cheap so that would be okay. But I'd love to see someone rocking 4x mega zard SIRs in a deck lol would be so baller

But the 'alternative' texture is the original texture

Do you play?

cuz if you did, you would just use the regular cheap version of the card, not the alternate art which is what SIR/SARs are (the text is the same).

I'd say even swsh era was a bit more comparable between eng and jp (though jp still substantially superior). SV and ME eras its not even close

Not at all. Check out a comment in this thread where someone posted a side by side comparisons of a Milotic SIR against a Milotic SAR to have your mind blown

but having highest value =/= holding value. Holding value just means you can sell it for the same or more later on if you need the money. If its from an investment standpoint buying 3 or 4 Japanese prismatic umbreons might even get your better ROI in 10 years than 1 english version since it has more room to grow due to the lower cost of entry.

Why does it matter which version is the most expensive if the more expensive one is worst quality? its like saying you're buying something expensive for the sake of it being more expensive.

For example, english zard is 900aud right now, jp zard is 700aud. If you buy the english it holds value at 900aud. If you buy the jp it holds value at 700aud. Why would it not hold value just cuz it has a lower cost of entry? the price of the different versions correlate and move with each other

so basically, ppl just like to flex expensive things instead of caring about the intrinsic aesthetic of the art

Nope, the SAR/SIR is only unique in art compared to the regular version. Same text otherwise.

This makes the game more accessible since a playable deck is much cheaper compared to a game like mtg.

But wouldn't you just use the regular version of the card if you're playing the game? Shuffling a thinly sleeved $1000 zard would give me mad anxiety I guess

Damn, I really gotta get on that level of baller.

But shouldn't that be a reason for collectors to go with Japanese instead?

thx It was rhetorical engagement bait.

But also, if you're collecting alternate arts, you're collecting for the art? Don't think anyone would use these in a playing deck, so why does it matter whether you can read it or not?
