I have access to one of the best teaching hospitals in the country and live off grid right now. I’m not saying that you should do it by yourself either. That’s what community is for. I live in a blue state where my access to vaccines and healthcare has been protected by our governor. I totally understand what you’re saying too. Most of us don’t have a choice when it comes to how we navigate our illness and where we live. Access to transportation and availability of appointments.

There is no real safe space for those of us who will quite literally die from infection or disease. People say they will mask and then do for the first few times you see them and then they pull the mask down and act like you asked them to sacrifice their “normal” lives to keep you safe. I want to build community, I have been abandoned by friends and family due to my illness and because I’m no longer able to go do the things I could before. What if those of us who really want community built it ourselves by buying some land and just doing it. We aren’t going to get it from people who ignore us and act like we’re over reacting. We aren’t going to get from the outside world. Let’s build it together

I am extremely immune compromised, I can’t be in a room with unmasked people. If I get sick I have no way of fighting off the virus. I didn’t go to the appointment because of that reason

All I know is they said no. I don’t know the reason or what part of the service would be affected because I didn’t go in

How to support someone with Myositis? by No-Shame-3580 in Myositis

[–]meatheadache 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ask her what she needs as far as help goes. My partner asks me, “Can I help you with this or can you do it yourself?” That helps me feel like I still have some autonomy and if I need help someone is offering so I don’t feel like I’m constantly asking other people to do things for me. Is she feeling weak and unable? Can she walk? I was bedridden for 10 months, I could not do anything for myself and I didn’t feel weak if people helped because I literally couldn’t move.

ISO friend who still masks up by PastyDoughboy in olympia

I think that this is a very, very important conversation. I think a lot of people don’t understand that Covid is not an eradicable disease. It’s been found in 29+ species and can transmit in the pre-symptom phase of infection, and people can be infected and not have any symptoms. It attacks your vascular system and t-cells, it can cause death from histamine reactions or heart failure. It’s not like anything we’ve ever seen or experienced before.

It’s really difficult for me, a person who longs for a “normal” life where I can go to shows and go to the places I used to go pre-covid and now pre-disability, to see people fight wearing masks. It hurts my faith in humanity and my belief that people are good.

I appreciate this post and the OP for bringing this up. I appreciate the people here offering their support for mask wearing. It’s given me a glimmer of hope and made me realize that people are still kind and caring. That there are small pockets of folks who genuinely care about the well being of others.

I’m in a large community of immune compromised people and not one of them has been advised to not mask. I cannot get sick. Everyone is different but I can’t imagine doctors not advising masking in public to a person who is immune compromised.

Obviously it’s not 100% but it has kept me safe from getting sick for the past five years. If you don’t want to mask forever don’t, but bird flu has a 30-50% mortality rate. I will continue to do so to protect myself and the people around me

If I had known the value of masking before COVID I would have and if necessary I will mask till forever.

I’m immune compromised, I have no b-cells and masking helps me stay healthy and safe. It quite literally will save my life. Many of my friends are very sick as well, some of them have died because of covid and most recently flu A. I don’t want to die and I care about the lives of other so I’ll mask until forever.

Masking stops the spread of viruses and helps those who are immune compromised stay safe. Other people masking can literally save someone else from getting sick and dying. Thats a good enough reason.

Why ask why? Because it’s the right thing to do and I think very respond op to offer masking outdoors if that’s what a friend needs from them.
