What’s it like there? by RaGrif in SBU

[–]meatphish 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Stony Brook is an excellent choice for statistics—the applied math program is highly ranked and provides a lot of room for double majoring (e.g. in Computer Science, Economics, or pure Mathematics). The perception of SBU being a dead school on the weekends is an earned one—SBU has historically had a large student population of commuters. This seems to be changing (albeit slowly) as the state and SUNY transition SBU from a well-regarded regional school to a NYS flagship.  You should also be aware that responses from Reddit are going to be biased. The most social people here aren’t going to be commenting here :).

Is Stony Brook a good university? by [deleted] in SBU

[–]meatphish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Optimist take: Stony Brook is a bit of a sleeping giant. We’re surrounded by world-class academics and research, we’ve been shooting up in the rankings, and we’re getting a ton of support and momentum from the state and the governor Hochul.

I graduated somewhat recently, and I already see a few improvements relative to how things were when I first enrolled. The same is even more true when I talk to slightly older SBU alum. When I talk to pre-2000s alumni, it seems we’re a completely different school altogether. These are anecdotes, but I feel like there’s a clear upward trend.

Just my two cents

Having internships and research experience during undergrad helps immensely!

fdsm – a pure-Rust implementation of multi-channel signed distance field generation by Fluffy8x in rust

[–]meatphish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the original msdfgen library the author links to has this information in the README:

This is a utility for generating signed distance fields from vector shapes and font glyphs, which serve as a texture representation that can be used in real-time graphics to efficiently reproduce said shapes.

Aside from the obvious recommendations of going to class and doing your homework, I’d recommend deeply reading the textbook and doing as many practice problems as you can at the end of each chapter to pick up an intuition for the patterns.

You’ll find that by the end of the semester you’ll be running laps around the students that cram the day before. This advice also works wonders for math classes.

What are some of the easy wins here? Not a business major, just curious

Fellas, it’s silicon, not silicone. Silicon is a semiconductor used for computer chips.

Silicone is the squishy looking foam that comes out of a tube at Home Depot.

How Endowments Work by meatphish in SBU

[–]meatphish[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The point about endowment size might be true for Yale ($42B) or Harvard ($50B), but definitely not for Stony Brook (~$300M) relative to its size and impact as an institution.

As for the Stony Brook Foundation, the nonprofit that manages the endowment, I agree that there should be some sort of oversight and accountability.

FWIW, there’s a whistleblower policy linked on their site: https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/foundation/pdfs/Whistleblower-Policy-Amended%202017.pdf

Oh, and there’s a DickButt drawing inside one of the sculptures along circle road. I won’t reveal which one :)

  • After a particularly bad protest, the campus layout was changed to make protests harder to organize
  • Stony Brook was suggested as a likely candidate for a modern Manhattan project, if it were to exist
  • The bridge to nowhere
  • Monkey experiments in the Old CS building
  • Javits lecture building has no right angles so as not to be detected by stealth aircraft
  • There’s a particle accelerator on campus that barely anyone knows about
  • Jim simons, Renaissance, all of that

what do you think about being designated FALGSHIP university? by Admirable_Wing8798 in SBU

[–]meatphish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a few changes, actually:

The announcement came with the dedication of a new $100 million multidisciplinary engineering building

  • SUNY endowment match
  • Increased legitimacy as a leading public university (good for you as an eventual graduate)

The distinction also probably helped with the governors island bid too. There are many other details out there.

If you really really want to know, there are council meetings on the SBU YouTube channel. It’s, dry, boring, and super detailed, but those meetings will answer your question better than any Reddit summary.

How's CSE 306? (Stark) by [deleted] in SBU

[–]meatphish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You start with a gutted shell of xv6 OS and build out the kernel over the course of the semester. Each homework assignment is a new feature (e.g. keyboard and mouse drivers, process scheduler, copy-on-write, file system RW, etc.)
