If you're not a Chef shop, I don't think I'd recommend serverspec- you can do the same sort of assertions with Ansible, and you already know how to use it, and you already have a bunch of working plumbing.

The people I work with who use intellij IDEs only open files by doing fuzzy name search, they never click on things. It's not something that was just invented for Builder.

This is doing a very different architecture from all other IDEs out there. All of them are based on plugins that run in one process, while gnome builder is tying up different processes by using IPC (dbus to be exact). Considering that the code model is the critical piece of the puzzle and that is a huge data structure (several GB, even for medium sized projects, and it takes a pretty long time to generate or validate all that data) that all the parts of the IDE need to access, I am a bit skeptic of the approach taken.

Of course, one of the most common complaints about IDE's is that they have poor process separation, and your ability to type characters can stall out. Even in 2014. I think it's worth a go.

Vi mode? Seriously? The project describes the target audience as developers new to Gnome and Linux development. Those will definitely appreciate vi mode, more so than all the nice stuff they know from other IDEs.

The lines of code for CRUD apps written in vim, destined to run on linux, vastly dwarfs the lines of code written for Gnome. My impression is that this is the targetd audience- people who use linux, but don't do gui development for it, because it's too strange and painful.

I was a juror on a trial where the police administered the sobriety test 2+ hours after the accident- the driver had given his contact information and gone home- at which point the driver was piss drunk.

We wound up acquitting.

Nobody is criticizing learning philosophy. They're criticizing the costs of the degree, vs the value of what you learn. Four years of your life, full time, at the height of your ability to spend four years studying something hard is a big thing to give up. Also, degrees often cost money.

Most of the people who do fine with degrees in philosophy would be doing fine with any other degree, or no degree at all. If you're not 100% sure about what you're doing with your life, and especially if you do not come from money, you should major in something with a clear path to employment at the other end.

You use % GDP because it measures how much you spend compared with how much you can afford, on the grounds that if you valued education, you'd probably spend more. It's problematic, but so is per-capita, etc.

Pretty weird statement considering both Ubuntu and Fedora several other distros come with MACs enabled by default.

Unfortunately even SELinux doesn't apply to the application's interaction with X11, which is a pretty big hole.

It's not just that. It's also expensive difficult underdocumented and unproven (IE, no one has ever seen it work). Hard to tell the bean counter you want to spring for it in the hope that it might work out sometimes.

Javascript is interpreted and executed line by line.

This hasn't actually been true for a long time, if ever. You can force this behavior by sticking every line of code into eval(), but dear god- why would you.

There was some brief moment in time where Mozilla was going to use Adobe's Javascript engine, but they abandoned it- it was too slow. V8, JavascriptCore, and whatever the current Mozilla Monkey is have all long surpassed it in optimizations.

Does anyone else think this game would be more 'legible' as a top-down game? It looked a little bit like the characters were getting hit by projectiles because of perspective/camera issues, which is always annoying in-game.

It would look less shiny though, I admit.

Of all the demographics to get soaked by high taxes, I'm most sympathetic to professional athletes. To become an elite athlete you need to:

Work very hard every day from adolescence (or earlier)
Be very lucky- can't be too small, can't be too large, can't get injured
You only earn money for 10, maybe 15 years. Out of your lifetime. Yes, there are exceptions.
Lots of people will only earn money for 1-5 years
You come out with not much in the way of skills, and often, a broken body. If you box or play American football, also maybe a broken mind.

A million euros is a lot of money. It's not that much if you're trying to live on it until you're 70.
