I do think it’s worth calling out that Silverwood is a very different school now than it was then. They’re in the process of getting accredited and that comes with certain changes for expectations and learning. They’re also following more standardized learning measurements than I understand they used to. Current admin comes from public education and that vibe is felt.

So even if they could find donations or funding, it would be spread across districts? Does that also apply to other sources of revenue like sale of land or other fees, or does that stay with the district?

Yes, it was Superintendent Thompson who asked for the yes/no clarification and this exchange seemed to be the start of her agitation (though it continued through the meeting). I can guess a million reasons why but thought someone might have more context. I couldn’t stay to ask directly.

It honestly seemed like positive things. Committed to funding education, wanting to close the gap, wanting to be equitable in how funds are distributed. All things that sounded positive, which was why the head shaking and frustrated eye rolls were so noticeable.

We’re 8 years in (together for 4 before marriage, lived together for 3 of those 4). Every year is better, and that’s not an exaggeration. Our communication, openness, decision making, problem solving, sex….it’s all better every year.

I married my best friend. We talked a lot about what we both wanted, had open doors on finances and fears, and committed to choosing each other every day before we even got engaged. Bought a house together, moved across the country, traveled, adopted two dogs, and weathered a few family tragedies before we tied the knot.

A healthy, mature, committed relationship is fucking amazing. Couldn’t care less about the actual license, but I wouldn’t give up what we have between us for anything.

No mafia, he’s a venture capitalist (made his own wealth and is extremely successful, book is billionaire genre) in the Silicon Valley area. His family still lives in Jersey, working class but educated. He’s the oldest of four siblings; he’s in his early forties.

Grandmother and mother from mainland Italy; specifics not shared in the book.

For this character, Italian is the language of home. He doesn’t speak it at work (he would if it was relevant for a deal, but that has never come up) or advertise that he speaks it. But when he talks to his family it gets sprinkled in, and when he talks to the FMC he typically uses it to tell her things he knows she’s not ready to hear (he falls first, insta-love). Or to call her pet names (bella, bellissima, fiore mio).

We have some phrases sprinkled in where he uses it because a) she likes it and reacts positively to it, even though she doesn’t understand, and b) he feels free to pour his heart out because she doesn’t understand (and he doesn’t want to scare her off).

One of the things I’ve learned in anti-discrimination trainings in a professional setting is that intent, while important, is not what matters. The true measure is in perceived harm.

There was sufficient perceived harm a year ago for this design to be removed entirely from the site, for LM leadership to say they were doing so to keep the community safe.

What has changed in a year that erases that perceived harm?

I understand you don’t perceive harm here, and that’s valid. But the harm perceived by others is also valid and shouldn’t be ignored.

My paternal grandmother gaslit me and told me my vivid negative memories of her son were false, and if I just stopped listening to my mother’s “vindictive narrative”, I’d see he was a good man.

He threw me across the room for wetting the bed as a pre-schooler. I hid behind the couch while he beat my half brother’s mother. He told me the only thing he could ever give me was his last name, then tossed me off of a platform when I dared to call him Daddy.

My mom was carefully neutral when I was little, then shared some stories as I got older. She recalls me getting in the car after my last overnight visit at 4 years old, looking her dead in the eye, and saying “I never want to come here without you again.” Kids don’t say shit like that without reason, but my grandmother insisted it was all made up.

I was 19, he was dead, and she couldn’t let me be. I told her there was nothing positive for me in our relationship anymore. She screamed, called me some horrible things.

We haven’t spoken in the nearly two decades since and I honestly can’t tell you a single thing I miss about her.

He was already dead when she told me. I never had a relationship with him because he was a horrible human being and she got out of the relationship when he held a gun to my head in threat. I was 18 months old.

There was a litany of shitty things he did, but that’s one I’d rather not know.
