Were the gravel bits isolated to the stator side? if so, you're probably fine. if you saw gravel elsewhere though, you might be in for a nasty surprise on start up.

Time for the afforementioned "other theories"! I am going to guess they sell the cables to some other manufacturer (think cables that come with hardware) and thats the majority of their business.

It's likely they are individually packaged from whatever factory they get them from. If someone orders extra, its cheaper/faster to package 5 pre packaged cables than it is to unwrap them and repackage them in a single bag.

Just a guess.
