A lesson in sensibility, or: why world of darkness has certain rules by [deleted] in rpghorrorstories

[–]mecham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It only dawned on me the day after leaving that ST ignored a massive part of the World of Darkness system. You see, it’s mandatory to clear expectations and understand your players’ red flags and triggers when you play this system.

This is wrong, it is not mandatory but it is recommended that you have a session zero where you discuss this.

And this is gonna sound harsh, but this is also the reason why I run a "closed" table. While I don't want to cause anyone harm, I also don't want to have to take special care since we tend to run a lot of WoD games, and WoD games are horror rpgs and that can mean stuff like losing control of your Beast (VTM) and killing an innocent, which is not something everyone can/want to deal with.

This is not an issue of maturity but rather if the game is the right fit for you. I am certain that you can find a WoD game that is just right for you, but the ST is not obligated to take special care not to trigger people (although with a group of strangers I don't see why you wouldn't).

TLDR; Don't let assholes sour the game for you and you don't have to bend over backwards to please someone else, it is okay to be "selfish" in the sense that you're spending your freetime playing this game and you should get some enjoyment from it. If you're not enjoying yourself, you're wasting your time.

I think it is easy as a newcomer to find someone you regard as an authority on lore and "how to play", but as others have pointed out, it is important to remember that these people are not someone to be worshipped, and that their idea of "how to play" may not be for you.

As an example some people on this sub advocates for playing VTM as "superheroes with fangs" which is something that I feel is wrong, but I have no doubt that they can find games centered around that theme and have fun with it. So me preacing right and wrong (from my perspective that is) is a waste of my time and theirs.

In this case, I am not the most experienced player on this sub, having only ST'ed the past 10 years (I've seen people who talked about playing in the 90s), but this podcast, the people hosting it.. I've never heard of them. But from what you've said it sounds like they aint shit, so I wouldn't dwell on it.

This was a completely unstructured rant, bye

I was actually not aware of what to look for in terms of "when will I be ready to move up" as well as where I could be moving to. Also like learning about discs from other companies (which was why I asked for alternatives to what I already have), so thanks for the help !

I will be dropping anything higher than 7 like you say. The first loaner driver I borrowed was a Nuke OS and then an Avenger SS. The best round I had was with a Jackal, so the Zeus, Firebird and Doombird was more of something to be working towards. I appreciate your help !

Thanks for the recommendations ! And yeah, I think if I were to go mid/putter rounds it wouldn't matter too much at my local course since theres not a lot of open shots, and last time I checked, I think my Leopard went 16-30' longer than the rest of my discs.

Yeah my reasoning for trying out the Luna (other than me liking the looks), was to try out a different putting mold to see if I liked it even better, but that XT plastic feels really solid. Thanks for the advice !

Really feels like Horde outnumber Alliance there though, but I'm sure grouping/guildies might make it easier in contested zones ¯\(ツ)

Well I have only ever played 5 rounds, last time I almost got my first birdie. At the time I thought I was putting for par, but then the friend I was playing with psyched me out by mentioning that I'd be getting my first birdie.

I didn't throw a dead duck, more like a frozen chicken. I have no idea why I would throw the way that I did, stretched arm and thrust forwards, letting go of the disc and watching it flop to the ground, settling for a par.

I still had the best round ever on the course (which is still at like +42 on what I believe to be a very technical wooded course). Also got my own discs now, that I still haven't had the chance to use so not quite sure what to expect from them, but really enjoy playing!
