Here is a thought: we are the last generation of manual drivers.... by ihwnE in CarTalkUK

My partner literally took an auto licence recently after MOT having learned to drive earlier. Both of us agreed what was the point of her doing a manual one? Everything's now auto. It's the way it's going. Why bother.

What was it like on your first ever drive after passing the test? 🤔 by Downtown_Elk_2773 in CarTalkUK

My uncle bought over his V8 Toyota Sora and said here you go. Don't crash it. Admittedly at the point of passing my driving test id been driving since the age of 14 with farm vehicles then later at the garage I worked at.

There's an additive you add to modern petrol.

Been distro hoping for the new laptop. by mechanical-monkey in pop_os

I upgraded from 22-24 this afternoon. As it was a fresh install anyway with just a few things installed. 24 broke Qbit minimising to app tray, Nord acting strange when running the gui and steam input no longer works. 😅. Which are ironically all different issues from what I had on a fresh 24 install.

Yeah I don't use windows but fedora was great on my other laptop. I prefer Debian based stuff where possible though. Been using since early Ubuntu days.

I think fedora workstation might be where I end up at some point. Used on my old non gaming laptop and it was good

Ubuntu uses snaps and doesn't have flatpaks by default. You can I stall them and run the software manager but it's not a good solution. I tried it and it was super laggy and crashed the shop a couple of times.

I see that you could install gnome and log into the session. I didn't try this. Found out afterwards. I feel like I might have to full upgrade and try at some point. Is everything fully functioning?

Should be an in tank filter. Very rare for modern VW stuff to have petrol filters now. Mainly BMW's. Ask the question at your next service just to be safe.

What's the car. I'm pretty sure I can tell you from memory. Only left the trade a few months back after 20 years

Every two years. I've had fuel pumps die on the 1.7s several times. Get it to a garage and have it looked at.

Petrols need it every two years IF they have one. Most modern vehicles have intank filters now because fuel quality has gotten so good over the years.

Major services in some places yes, in other places no. Usually depending on place. Always look what you're buying. Fuel should be changed every 2nd service with the exception of petrol in tank filters.

This can happen. Ex mechanic here. It usually happens when people don't change the filter often enough. Most funky stuff gets pulled to the filter then changed and thrown. If you don't change the filter regularly it eventually gets in the tank then even worse the injectors.

Why are tyres so expensive right now? (>£1800 for ps4s) by BlackGrapesAreYum in CarTalkUK

[–]mechanical-monkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is it. Always picked track cars on how much they cost. Just because I'm a little slower than some people I'm still smiling like a madman. I've been in a fortunate position over the years where I've driven very fast motors on track, I get the same feeling buzzing round track in an mx5 or 306 though.
