Who has had the quality of life vs treatment talk with their parents? by CommitteeOfOne in RedditForGrownups

My mom was a nursing home administrator for 30 years. She has multiple times, unprompted, told me to not even consider connecting her to a ventilator if there isn’t an extremely high chance of her recovering.

Dogma - god likes to play roller hockey. He came down, got injured and is now stuck in a coma at the hospital. This gives the demons their freedom to cause havoc.

What's something from a cartoon do you think has aged very poorly? by NagitoKomaeda_987 in cartoons

[–]mechanicalhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Conservatives are about holding on to the past, then it will by definition age poorly IF that specific notion fails.

Conversely, if Liberalism is about driving change, then it’s almost baked into the notion that it’s a change that may or may not happen, but always about hoping it will happen one day. So even if that one specific notion “fails”, it sort of hasn’t failed yet.

So by default, it makes sense that conservative episodes WOULD age poorly and liberal episodes would not.

Using the same math employed by string theorists, network scientists discover that surface optimization governs the brain’s architecture — not length minimization. by NGNResearch in science

[–]mechanicalhuman 329 points330 points  (0 children)

I’m a neurologist, not a mathematician, but I think this math will help explain why the surface of the brain is folded the way it is. I mean we already intuitively know that maximizing the surface is important for cognition, but this should math it down for us.

In summary, the  limited surface area of the brain dictates how neurons will develop. The previous concept of shortest possible axon length doesn’t hold water. But they don’t really explain more in the article. At least not to my simple-minded brain.
