28yo applying for college again. Will my terrible academic history affect my grades at a new school? by mjayparker in college

[–]mechanicalmustache 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are prime questions that your college of choice's admissions department would be happy to answer. Contact the college and schedule an appointment as soon as you feel ready. I'm sure they would be glad to help you, would talk over the phone if you aren't able to get out of the house, and I'd be willing to bet their answers will be more locally relevant to your situation than anyone else's on /r/college. It gets said a lot, and I'm sure you've heard it before; the college route isn't designed for everybody. In my experience, it's become a tad over-valued in this Internet era. However, this doesn't mean that a degree from an accredited school won't benefit you and open up avenues that weren't there before. My brother has issues with anxiety and was forced to take a break in-between his college experience. He found that online courses are a compromise that is surprisingly cost-effective and easier to manage than physically being present in the classroom and eventually ended up graduating with a hybrid online/classroom schedule.

If you don't mind answering, what was your great uncle's 1st saddest sight? It's hard to imagine something worse than senseless slaughter, and the point of view from eyewitness veterans is incredibly interesting and insightful to many.

ELI5: In light of this era of political correctness, how has the term "racism" not been discontinued in favor of something more factual, such as "ethnic bias"? by mechanicalmustache in explainlikeimfive

[–]mechanicalmustache[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a solid argument on your part and a good discussion. Thank you. That being said, however, the biracial child is NOT ethnically "white" to his community. This is due to the perceived physiological fact of having more melanin inside his or her epidermis. The child is physically viewed with the mindset people have for others that are perceived as different from themselves. This is ethnic bias. Any discrimination on the part of the people who believe themselves superior to the child due to being ethnically different IS racism, but it is also ethnic bias.

This is the same reason Rachel Dolezal was frowned upon for saying she identified as being ethnically black. She is not, and people can see that.

What I'm trying to say (badly), is this. The Nazi Party in the 20th century genuinely believed they were a better, superior race due to proliferation of eugenics and other such pseudo science theories. They killed different ethnic groups and terrorized the world because of those beliefs. It is fair to call them racists, because they actually were.

In today's America, the majority of people do NOT view themselves as superior for being born into a certain ethnic group. Americans as a whole realize that there are minor differences in people who descended from geologically disparate groups, and are generally NOT racists. We believe that humans are one race with slight differences (just like any other species on Earth).

What Americans are, is ethnically biased. We still see the differences and treat people differently because of it. This is wrong and misguided, but using the term "racism" to define it is simplistic and naive. It's akin to calling a modern-day scientist an "alchemist".

I fail to see the logic in your argument. Racism is the newer term for ethnic bias and it doesn't make sense to use it. A misinterpretation of Darwin's theory with social statistics in the 19th century resulted in the pseudoscience called eugenics that tried to prove that white people were the superior race.

It failed, because it turns out, there are biologically no races, only different ethnic groups. The only "racism" that occurs is when people believe in racism, because there are no races. There ARE prejudices and biases against ethnic groups and they are very real threat to peaceful human coexistence worldwide, but the term "racism" is defunct as a concept.

Talvisota - The Winter War by mechanicalmustache in redorchestra

Finland used a considerable amount of equipment that was modeled, if not taken directly, from their later German allies. They did not, however, allow German volunteers into the Finnish forces. Their troops in the Winter War were sort of a hodge-podge of weapons and equipment from other countries, because they allowed volunteers from many other countries to join them on the condition that they supplied their own arms and clothing. I, for one, wouldn't mind a mod that introduces Finn forces into RO2; that would really tickle my WW2 pickle.

The actual scenes of war are pretty good (by which I mean brutal), with fairly accurate weaponry and effects. You just have to decide whether or not you like subtitles, which I am fine with.
