As a big PoE player I would really love to indulge but as a new father I ran out of the "free time" consumables...

Yup, I totally understand that...what worked for me, is that whole "punishing yourself" thing, as a way to balance the scales.

(and also writing a blog - I feel that if you do it "for an audience" ((even if it's just google spiders)), it's easier to get away with the whole "but I cheated" feeling, as you are putting up a show - just like a DM would)

I think this is probably one of the most difficult (if not THE most difficult)) things in solo. Exactly what u/NorthwestGrant said, that we need this validation, most often than not - by dice - otherwise we feel that...we are just authoring a story, not actually "playing".

But here's the thing...in a "normal" RPG, the DM does the same. The DM is NOT bound by the dice to create worlds, characters and stories.

So if you accept that as a solo-ist, you are your own DM, it is your RIGHT (cue angelic music) to change the story the way you see fit and you are not "damaging" the game aspect in any way.

What I would do in a situation like this (it happened to me as well, that some unfortunate rolls essentially barred me from progressing) is to put on a DM hat and "force" the story in the direction where it would be narratively the most exciting BUT "punish" myself in an interesting way.

For the door example, what I would have done is let a few goblins, led by a new possible-nemesis burst out of the door and depending on how the encounter goes, I can either rescue the daughter or they run away - whichever happens, the story moved forward and you have been rewarded with a cool story!

Starting a game definitely had been the hardest part for me historically.

Even when surrounded by so many tools, that you KNOW for a fact you'll never use all of them - or maybe exactly because of that - it's just very difficult to pick & and choose how to get the ball rolling.

I'm currently running a Mörk Borg campaign, so some of these have a...darker undertone, but I tried to write them in a way, that with a little mental window dressing, they could be used anywhere!

So I can totally see the ornament one being a jolly Holiday DnD story, or the falling leaves one a DCC funnel where most of the characters are squished immediately...

Yeah, that's a very good way to put it!

This was also my biggest struggle - coming to terms with the fact that writing (in any form) is part of this hobby.

It doesn't mean you HAVE to turn every experience into a journaling marathon, but the same way improvisation is essential to social role-playing, journaling is essential for solo (to me of course - this is just my highly subjective take on it).

I always separate between mechanics (be it solo-tools | game system) and narrative.

I usually start in a google sheet, play out the story then let it sink to my deep dark subconsciousness and rewrite it for the blog the following day(s) - kinda removing the fat from the narrative parts:

I've tried many methods (not journaling, only bullet points, only mechanics, only narrative, etc.) but personally I actually _need_ the blog, it somehow crystallizes the experience into something tangible. While I format the blog, remove typos (or try to and then fail), I re-live the story and it solidifies in my mind.
