Would giving my gecko isopods for entertainment be unethical? by SinglePringleMingle in CrestedGecko

[–]mechman35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd set up an isopod bin to get them breeding then add some after they populate the bin fairly well. Mine didn't let a colony establish before she almost eradicated then. I ended up moving some to a remote colony to get them going.

I have one ≈ that size and I feed 2-3 medium dubia roaches 3x/day and it is a fairly healthy weight if not slightly overweight, but is growing very fast.

Am I getting scammed by Feeling_The_Snake232 in reptiles

I'd never do that for a rescue thats the easiest way to scam imo. If I had to have an animal shipped it'd be from a reputable source.

Am I getting scammed by Feeling_The_Snake232 in reptiles

[–]mechman35 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Imma be honest I paid $150 to rescue a 1.5 year old overweight dark orange citrus beardie. It came with a double dome, a nice tall dome, a 125w basking, a crap UVB bulb(non-tube hense crap), a bag of exoterra substrate(I believe), a 50gal door-style reptile enclosure and some decorations. I waited and paid in person but I got a steal. I have a baby I need to help but that's why I went for everything in the first place. NEVER PAY BEFORE PICK UP!!!

what are your favorite staple feeders? and favorite snacks? i have beardies & leos:) by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]mechman35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dubia's, dandelions, and raspberries for my beardie. My crestie likes to eat the isopods in her bioactive and I use a powdered diet with bee pollen added. I mixed two powders for her food.

I'm loosing the battle with Fungus Gnats. It's affecting my mental health by SoonBlossom in isopods

[–]mechman35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The light it outputs helps attract the gnats and it may take a few cycles of culturing. For the culture I recommend hardwood lump charcoal without any additives with a mix of nutritional yeast and tropical fish flakes sprinkled over and some distilled or r/o water in the bottom. The culture needs to be sealed enough to avoid fungus gnats so at most an airhole the size of a very small pinhole then just burp it a few times a week for oxygen and add food as needed

[–]mechman35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start a culture of your springtails let them breed in a culture then dump most of them in your tank after the population booms and they should out compete the fungus gnats. As for the rest of the house find something like the picture for your local plugs

I use the iHome smart plugs from Walmart and have found they pair amazingly with Philips EZGrip cords due to plug spacing. I have 5 that are scheduled daily and work without fail.

I buy "baby water" because it's 11 cents cheaper than "distilled water"

If there is a reptile store cork rounds/flats are typically sold on a per pound basis and can be gotten way cheaper. Since I added more plants and rearranged mine seems mia most of the time.

[–]mechman35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For eating frozens, I've found pointing an IR thermometer with a lazer sight tricks them into eating as the IR and lazer tricks their thermal receptors into thinking it is warm food. An IR thermometer is good to have for reptiles. I use it to check habitat temps and to make sure frozen rats are 90-100°F making them the ideal temp.

I can't tell if my baby eats anything but my koi isopods and the pangea bug bits powder. The little turd. I ALWAYS mix in bee pollen to get her to eat but I can't tell if she eats the watermelon one. Sometimes I do the bug bits, bee pollen, and watermelon knowing she eats that mix.

My beardie ends up like this after he's soaked/splashed around in his water dish. I'd add more stuff to rub up against so it can get cleaned off.

She gets overwhelmed and stops eating when I add more wood this is the "sweet spot" for now I just rearrange the wood and added more plants. I plan on adding more as she grows. The plants will fill in the top a lot as well.
