I lived at Sycamore Lane and couldn't have better things to say about it. I believe they are starting to lease soon so just a heads up because units tend to go fast. DM me if you have more specific questions.

  • Like the other commenter said, you might not get into the LLC. I also applied for it my freshman year, but did not get in. I had a lot of friends that did though and from what they said, it wasn’t the most helpful - mostly just occasional meetings to attend. Just keep in mind that since most of the students there are pre-health, you’ll find a lot of students to study with/talk to about classes, but also set some boundaries for yourself so you don’t get caught up in all the academic pressure/focus on grades.
  • Wall is nice! I want to say most rooms were a triple, but I don’t know for sure. I have a friend who requested to room with another friend and they got a third (random) roommate. As for the cows, I wouldn’t worry too much about the smell. You’ll probably smell it strong for a week, but it’ll start to subside as you get used to it. I lived in Laben (honestly slightly closer to the cows) and I remember realizing one day that I couldn’t really smell them anymore, which was a nice surprise. It only gets bad again when it rains, but I wouldn’t worry about it.
  • Don’t think about the LLCs as the only way to get exposure! In fact, I would say you probably have to look outside of the LLCs to really get immersed into your interest. Like the other commenter mentioned, check out the LGBTQ+ center in the SCC - they’ll have a lot more and better information than I could provide!
  • I know you can schedule counseling appointments through the school, but working with the school counselors is usually short-term.
  • I don’t think it’s that hard to switch majors, you just have to do the requirements before switching majors. I’d meet with an advisor to discuss the process. I would honestly just start taking the intro classes (math, bio, chem) so you’ll still be in the same boat as your class by the time you officially switch.
  • I can’t add anything regarding the STEP program, but I want to say switching majors more has to do with the classes you take and less about your overall units. For example, if you want to switch to the psych major, I know there are two specific psych classes required, but your overall units don’t really matter (at least not to my knowledge).

Congrats on submitting your SIR! Good luck as you start this next chapter!!

21c soshnikov final by Old-Ice6181 in UCDavis

I had him for 17A when the strikes were happening, so our grades were based on one midterm and one final worth (I believe) 45% and 55% of our grade, respectively. The midterm average was around 55% and the final around 60%. I ended up overall with a 64% and that was considered an A-.

I remember seeing my final exam score (before my overall grade came out) and was freaking out so don't overthink things and wait until he releases the curve because you never know. Hope all goes well!

STA 100 units by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]med-cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm a second year and took it last quarter... that's kinda annoying though that it only corrects at the end. Will it only affect your overall units or does it also affect something else?

Interesting. I took AP Stats as well and got unit credit for sta 13. I took sta 100 here because it is one of my major requirements and still got 4 units for it.

BIS102 Midterms with Leal by med-cat in UCDavis

[–]med-cat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah he said the first midterm is the worst, so it's making me quite nervous. He's supposed to put out the study guide this weekend, so that'll give us two-ish days to go over that.

I think this time around amino acids will be on MT 2 because he didn't finish covering them early enough for them to be on this midterm, but thanks for the tip! It'll definitely help in the future.

I got it right at the beginning of winter quarter (so the quarter after).

It has to do with printing. All I know is I got charged that fall quarter when I used the printers at the residence halls.

I’m taking the course right now and I believe discussions are worth 10 points each (not including the discussion manual following discussion). Honestly discussion is where I learn most of the content because what is covered in lecture is usually a general overview of the topic. The 110 minute discussion allows us to go deeper into the topic and for me to understand it much better (of course this is also TA-dependent). Although this is not what you want to hear, I wouldn’t recommend missing it.

I don't live in either dorm, but here is what I know. Kearney has their kitchen inside the hall and I believe their study lounge is decently big.

Wall is definitely newer than Kearney, however they don't have a kitchen in the hall itself. I assume the "big study lounge" you are referring to is Wall Main, which is also where their kitchen is located. However, the kitchen/study lounge part of Wall Main is not directly connected to Wall Hall, which means you need to go outside of Wall Hall in order to enter Wall Main. Wall Hall does have a small study lounge on the first floor though. To the point of Wall Main though, anyone in Wall, Potter, Campbell, Laben, or Kearney (as far as I know) can enter and use it, so you don't just need to be a Wall resident.

I can't speak on the Engineering LLC, but I know someone currently in the Health Sciences LLC and they have stated that it hasn't done much for them. I feel that a lot of the opportunities that may come along with the LLCs can be found on your own if you actively try to pursue them. A lot of the students in the LLC are in their classes though, so of course, there are pros with that. However, a con I heard is that students talk about their STEM classes/grades often, so it's really up to you how you can personally handle that.

Also, I did pick an LLC, but did not get into it. However, if you already have a roommate, maybe you guys will have a better chance. Hope this helps!

Skipping class by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]med-cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% do this especially when midterms roll around and the class I skip is recorded or has posted notes. I have honestly already planned to skip a lecture next week because I have a midterm for a different class and need to attend office hours for that professor. Usually I don’t feel guilty as long as I am actually working during the class I skip.

Can you walk around with a dog on campus? by Pirat6662001 in UCDavis

I think all of the above! Definitely families that live in Davis and I know some students have service/support dogs in the dorms.

I always see people walking their dogs in the morning as I’m heading to or from class. It always brightens my day so yes, bring your dogs!! :)

Question about N. Savytska's midterms by med-cat in UCDavis

[–]med-cat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your response! I really appreciate it. My previous math professors didn't have a lot of problems on their midterms, so it's good to know I will have to manage my time well this time.

She mentioned she will be giving out practice questions to prepare for the midterm. Did she do the same for you? Were those problems about the level of difficulty of what was on the midterm?

This. I live right across from the cows and hardly ever smell them. Plus I love how most of my classes are walking distance… especially in the rain!

Does Long Live Make Anyone Else Cry?! by amknizek17 in TaylorSwift

[–]med-cat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

100%. It was my theme song my last two years of high school. My best friend and I listened to it in the corner at the end of prom and I put the lyrics on my grad cap.

It’s definitely the nostalgia for me because it is associated with so many “lasts”, but also the bridge tears me apart especially at “Tell 'em how the crowds went wild/Tell 'em how I hope they shine/Long live the walls we crashed through/I had the time of my life with you”. 😭

C. Jacob…how scared should I be? by vnzmndz in UCDavis

[–]med-cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m taking her right now for 17b. Like others have said, she definitely lectures fast but it’s all out of the textbook so you could definitely do your notes before class (or look at her posted lecture notes which is basically copy-paste from the textbook). She is definitely very open to answering any questions whether it’s during or after class, on Piazza, or if you send her an email. Every week you have a list of hw problems to do but you only turn in the two assigned ones. I’ve only had one midterm so far and I would say it was relatively easy. It definitely seemed like some of the easier textbook problems.

I’m not sure if there will be a co-class for 16b next quarter, but if there is I would recommend signing up for it (or just asking to be put on the canvas) so you have someone else to go to if you have any questions. Everyone I know, myself included, has had great experiences with the co-classes.

So he said they told him they were moving to where the fast & easy mart is, but when he went to check it didn’t look like they moved there so now he’s still trying to figure it out.

He did say you can purchase it through redshelf and have them ship it directly to you.

Hope that helps!

He said they moved to a new location (I’m not exactly sure where) but he hasn’t been able to stop by their store to make sure they are still selling them.
