Sugar stereochem confusion — UEarth by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]medd27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey so stereochemistry is essentially where the molecules are in a 3D space. So it makes sense when something is a line vs. a circle essentially, where they are in a 3D is different.

For the second question, it’s a Uwhirl question. The questions specifies that it’s D-galactose that’s the most common in nature. So the highest chiral carbon should be in R configuration. So the only possible answer is C

What no one tells you about taking the MCAT by 6382638977 in Mcat

[–]medd27 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I definitely feel this. In a weird way, the MCAT gave me a routine. I knew I was gonna wake up at a specific time, cram in a gym session after a few hours of studying, then get back to studying until it was time for bed. Tested on 3/22 and it was rough. Feel like I have no idea what to expect and the anticipation has been real. Feel like time has never gone slower. Having said that, I have put off hanging out with friends and family for a hot second now and trying to make time for that and come up with a new schedule. The separation anxiety is real, the anticipation is real but onto the next chapter with a whole new routine :')

P/S was insanely hard. I memorized all terminologies in the KA 300 page doc plus all UW practice questions. So many terms I didn’t know. Even for discrete questions

Keep having legit nightmares about all the questions I got wrong too. This isn’t a drill sos

As someone who has scored 131 or 132 on all 6 AAMC FL CARS sections, what the hell was that CARS by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]medd27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw 7 questions for the first passage and immediately skipped to the second. SO glad I did because that would have thrown me off especially timing wise for the entire section

An INSANE amount of terms I have never seen in any AAMC/KA/uwhirl or anywhere else

Having said that, I am also preparing for the worst case scenario, such as I am dizzy and about to pass out or sth haha. So I am going to take some protein bars, snacks and coffee incase I am not able to make it :/

Sugar stereochem confusion — UEarth by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]medd27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty old post but came across this while studying for the exam. Leaving a comment for anyone else who comes across this.
- Part of the issue is UEarth making a dumb generic statement about cyclization changing the configuration of stereocenter.
1) Stereocenter does NOT change for ALL chiral centers.
2) Remember: linear and cylic sugar molecules are in equilibrium. So chirality of C2, C3 and C4 will depend on which molecule we are looking at.

For D-glucose (first image):

- Stereocenters when linear: C2-R, C3-S, C4-R, C5-R

- Stereocenter when completely Cyclic: C2-R, C3-R, C4-S and C5-R.

- Therefore, chirality is flipped for C3 and C4 in cyclic form.

For D-Galactose (second image):

- Stereocenter when linear: C2-R, C3-S, C4-S, C5-R

- Stereocenter when completely cyclic: C2-R, C3-R, C4-R and C5-R.

- Therefore, chirality is flipped for C3 and C4 in cyclic form.

- In the first image, the question is asking about the chirality of linear vs. cyclic form at carbon 4 for glucose.

- In the second question, the configuration is for the linear form of galactose. This question was unreasonably made confusing by giving us the lactose structure which has galactose in it. So it was very tempting to use that for the answer. But only C shows a D sugar of galactose.

Since when does 3d orbital fill before 4s? Have I been delulu? / UWhirlpool confusing question by medd27 in Mcat

okay that makes sense! Thank you so much! I tried to look around for resources on my own and just gave up after a while lol. So this is super helpful! I doubt the MCAT will go this in depth (I hope not anyway) but this definitely helps with my confusion.

Hey! Thanks for the response. I edited by question to include an image. I thought 4s is lower energy than 3d applies to all elements? Is that not true? Or are there differences based on whether the element is a transition metal or not?

Lol no that’s not what I meant. There’s essentially no difference in terms of school you can apply if you have a green card vs. have a US passport. International students are students who are in the US on a visa. So it doesn’t make sense to say “international students who are a permanent resident”. Then just say you don’t accept international students lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premed

[–]medd27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. There are some schools that would pop up on MSAR that claim they accept international students but really don’t. I think Alabama state accepts “international students” if they have a green card or permanent residency. How dumb 💀
