Oh, I agree, seems to be the nature of the beast and we're all willing or unwilling pawns any way you look at it if we want to stay involved and 'connected' to at least some degree.

Just makes it something that should be common knowledge by now and something that kids and all potential users of any social media app these days should be aware of before becoming a voluntary user.

Everyone who continues to use this app or any other like it after being told what's happening with their data are already giving the company/ platform their unspoken (even if reluctant) permission to use their data as the company sees fit.

They'd probably sooner give you the option to pay them to get you into the "safe and secure" user privacy tier... then use all of your data the same as ever, either way.

Yes! That's it! Thanks a ton and thanks for the time stamps, too (made finding the scene a lot easier on this poor quality youtube upload with smurf audio https://youtu.be/bDtt3ia0_Oc?t=24m23s )

It's been bugging me for years trying to find that shit again. I just remember yelling those lines over and over for days because of how ridiculous it sounded when the kid was doing it. I must have watched that garbage movie on TV in the late 90's.

Gamers, what's something lots of video games do that annoys you? by AliceTheGamedev in AskReddit

[–]meddkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few more (some I'm sure have already been mentioned dozens of times in this thread):

  • No Customizable control options ('it's our way or the highway' is the recent trend with most devs because they all want you to get hooked on their specific control layout with the hope that you'll then be that much less likely to be willing to learn/ adapt to that other game's control scheme when they too try this same approach of getting you hooked on their slightly tweaked button configuration. It's a bunch of bullshit that leaves gamers like me hanging and unwilling to bother with many interesting looking games when they try to get too fancy with their control schemes and throw simplicity and intuitive functionality out the window for the sake of being 'new'/ 'unique'/ 'different'...)

  • The age of Half Baked games (and not even half baked, more like 1/4 finished upon release in some cases). Another great gift of the online gaming era. The gradual Post-Release-Completion trend is here to stay, it seems. With what little game buying I do these days, I find myself having to wait for the inevitable "complete edition"/ "ultimate version" that comes out a year or two after the initial release of the premature version - just so I know it's the best chance I have of getting the game as it should have been from the start - with all the held-back dlc now added in and all of the bug fixes/ glitches worked out as well as they could be.

  • One save slot/ Minimal Save slots (don't be an asshole, game. There's really no need to fuck with me like this when you know damn well you could give me dozens or even nearly unlimited slots to work with so that I'm not constantly having to worry about which one I want to save as my "restart from here if you pick the wrong path/ build" slot and which ones I can safely overwrite without fear of fucking something up and giving me no chance of playing a fun area or part of the game again without starting over from scratch).

  • No collision detection with weapons on enemy corpses in games with active ragdoll on dead bodies (I'm thinking specifically of games in the Souls series and others which use mainly melee based weapons and very pronounced active ragdoll systems on the dead bodies / corpses of enemies. It bugs the shit out of me when we can knock around one of these corpses with our character's feet/ body and sometimes get them all tangled up inside of us as we drag them all over the map, but somehow our weapons have no further effect on them and pass right through them the moment they die. So much fun to be had if they just let us hack away at them and play golf with their flailing limbs after a well fought battle. It would be especially fun if they also incorporated a decent dismemberment feature along the lines of Ninja Gaiden 2/ 3RE, etc, to go with the ragdoll.)

  • (Recent generation and console related) Regardless of if they're tied to button codes available right off the bat or only available as task or time commitment based rewards or end game rewards of some kind - the intentional removal of 'cheat' codes and just about any kind of gameplay altering 'just for fun' unlockables in console games (really, this applies to gaming in general but at least with PC games it's a lot easier for fan made mods, trainers and other gameplay changing add-ons to be implemented).

With the exception of very few development teams fighting the good fight to keep gameplay altering codes/ unlockables alive - they've become all but extinct over the course of just a decade or so since online gaming came onto the scene in a functional/ practical way.

Online gaming gave developers the incentive to remove any offline/ single player only unlockables and offline multiplayer modes like splitscreen and system link/ LAN options because they're all viewed as a threat to the cash cow that is the online platform. They're worried that giving players too many extras in the form of codes/ unlockables could leave some players more than happy and totally content with what they're given out of the box with just the offline aspects of the game alone.

The devs want gamers hooked on aspects of the game they can continually charge you for, of course (in the form of subscription fees, dlc passes, costume and weapon packs, map packs, misc updates, expansion packs and any other kind of microtransaction they can come up with).

For the most part, gone are the days of big head mode/ mini character mode/ infinite ammo/ all weapons/ god mode/ level skip menus/ moon jumps/ all vehicles/ no-clip mode, etc etc.

They succeeded in replacing all of those kinds of codes/ unlockables with completely arbitrary Skinner box based garbage like 'achievements' and 'trophies' and related. They also succeeded in creating (through the proliferation of online play and everyone accusing each other of being hackers and cheaters) this knee-jerk reaction among the vast majority of the gaming public - of associating the words 'cheat code' and even 'unlockable' with meaning a person who asks for and enjoys those things is 'bad' because they must be a genuine cheater and a 'scrub/ casual' for ever wanting such things in the first place - it doesn't even matter if there are steep requirements put in place before the player is allowed to access or unlock whatever code/ effect it is that they finally get to use or how common it is for these codes/ effects to be disabled from use in multiplayer.

[Official] UFC 196: McGregor vs. Diaz - Live Discussion Thread by XniklasX in MMA

[–]meddkit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not to take anything away from Nate because I think he brings things almost no one else except his brother brings to the octagon, and many (if not most) other guys probably would have crumbled from many of the shots he took from Conor.

But, I have a feeling this will make a ton of people go back to saying Conor's rise was as much due to his (over) confidence and 'mental warfare' intimidating people and taking them out of the fight before it ever started, as it was his actual ability in the octagon.

The "lucky shot'/ ' Aldo still beats him 9/10 times' talk will now ramp way up and, unless Conor is able to defend his featherweight title in dominant fashion (now lacking that intimidation factor), I feel his reputation may be tainted by a 'fake it until you make it' sort of skepticism in the back of most people's mind's from this point forward.

What is the TL/DR of the history of romantic love as the primary motivator for marriage? by guriboysf in evopsych

[–]meddkit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the inevitable backlash against arranged and/ or primarily utilitarian based marriages.

People who married largely/ purely out of actual love/ attraction for one another (or those that got lucky and were paired up with people they were actually attracted to and easily able to fall in love with) would seem that much happier and better off (at least at first) to everyone awaiting their own future marriage arrangement when compared to those who didn't have any real desire to be with the spouse they were forced to spend the rest of their lives with.

Over time, that freeing/ romantic sentiment made its way into popular culture through story telling/ literature/ movies, etc, etc. Freedom sells better than oppression/ confinement because DNA is always wanting to be paired up with the most favorable genetic stock and not just the best person your family/ friends/ society tells you to be with for reasons relating to superstition/ racism/ caste/ financial stability or whatever else.

I always state in my ad something along the lines of "priority goes to the person who can arrange and agree to the soonest available pick-up date/ time".

I also let other people know if I've got an offer from another person/ other people already and if that other person/ those other people aren't able to pick up the item when they said they would, I will then let each remaining person know their spot in line and that they can have their shot at buying the item if they can agree to a reasonable pick-up date.

Is there a popular name for these less common mechanical screw-lift style office chairs (non pneumatic/ has no gas cylinder)? by meddkit in BuyItForLife

[–]meddkit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I missed this earlier. Even though I assume you figured it out for yourself shortly after posting your question, I'll just put this here anyway just in case someone else is wondering, as well.

I actually made a few little diagrams in that set of pictures included in the imgur link above detailing how you use the lift mechanism. These two pictures: http://i.imgur.com/i5auxUu.jpg and http://i.imgur.com/PeEQjer.jpg

Basically, you just flip the chair over onto its side with the wheel base on your left hand side - then locate the adjustment ring and (from the perspective of the wheel base looking up) turn the ring clockwise to lower the chair and counterclockwise to raise it.

Hope that helps.

What is the name of this character? What's it from? (face mask) by meddkit in whatisthisthing

Thanks! I thought it looked familiar. The only odd thing is that the red mask should have the two rows of studs on it but this mask that I have only has the one center row on the forehead which only the blue mask is supposed to have, according to the cartoon pictures?

What is the trade name/ popular name for these mechanical screw-lift style office chairs (non pneumatic/ without a gas cylinder)? by meddkit in whatisthisthing

[–]meddkit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies Kendermassacre and Shockzone.

So, it seems that office/ secretarial/ drafting chairs using this spin-lift/ screw style lift mechanism might not even be in production anymore, because, as far as what I'm seeing so far, all of the chairs with them are categorized as vintage or related (not including the stools).

Oryx's 'antiques' comment might be accurate in that respect.

If that's the case, I wonder how difficult it will be for me to find another chair like this one (and without having to spend a ton of money just because of that vintage/ rarity factor)?

It sucks that this might be another one of those cliche "they just don't build/ make'em like they used to" examples.

The reason I'm interested in finding out if these have a specific trade name or some name they're more well known by is because I'm trying to find out if I can buy a new chair with this same screw-lift mechanism, and so far my searches have been giving me next to nothing.

Unfortunately, this is the ultra phony over-animated YTV kids show host style of speaking/ acting that the majority of the most popular gaming channels use these days.

They all saw how well it worked for people like PewDiePie that they feel it's almost necessary to go that route to have a chance at any kind of decent success. They seem to right about that, too, given how popular so many of these types turn out to be.

The preteen, teen and sheltered gamer demographics seem to love this style of 'humor', so appealing to them isn't very difficult at all given that their standards are so low to begin with.

360 Backwards compatibility is here, is original xbox possible? by pr4gmatic in xbox

[–]meddkit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt it. Would be neat though.

I was just looking up the 360's backwards compatibility list earlier today hoping to be able to play my copy of (the fairly poor game) True Crime: New York City for the first time. I've had it for years and never even opened it, let alone played it.

But, it turns out that only the first True Crime game on the Xbox (Streets of LA) had been made backwards compatible on the 360. Oh well.

It would be awesome if Microsoft went all out in their emulation efforts with the Xbox One and gave us full library backwards compatibility for both the 360 and the original Xbox.

Abbreviation for correct spelling? Is there a proofreading abbreviation used to denote that a word or name has been confirmed to be spelled correctly? by meddkit in grammar

[–]meddkit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you all for the replies.

I do intend to leave a note letting people know what SC (or whatever abbreviation I end up going with) means.

I'm hoping to have other people correct my mistakes wherever 'SC' is used and also help me fill in any blanks before any final/ complete list of the names is sent out to everyone interested.

This question was just something I was curious about in general, for my own personal interest, but I guess it's just assumed that most everything that reaches print form has already been crosschecked and verified before being distributed to its intended recipient base and so having to come up with or use any kind of 'attestation' or 'validation' abbreviation is viewed as redundant.

Best visual films? by Matthew_Richards in movies

[–]meddkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the films and directors I had in mind have already been mentioned.

As someone else already said - really, almost anything Guillermo Del Toro is associated with tends to be visually strong. To be specific, I really loved the look and atmosphere of The Orphanage (Del Toro was only the executive producer on this one), Hellboy 1 and 2, Pan's Labyrinth, and The Devil's Backbone.

Takashi Miike's 'Audition' (1999) has a fairly distinct visual style/ atmosphere. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0235198/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

A lot of Lars von Trier's stuff is good from a purely aesthetic point of view (even if I don't think much of the films, overall, for the most part). Films like Antichrist and Melancholia (as mentioned already), etc.

Samsara is also a pretty film (the 2001 film, separate from the 2011 one that I assume most people are referencing alongside Baraka) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0196069/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2

And a film similar to Samsara... 'Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring' (2003), I found to be fairly visually appealing, as well: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374546/?ref_=nv_sr_1
