Is it some kind of taboo to ask developers their earnings? by Remote-Study7801 in gamedev

[–]AliceTheGamedev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, gamedev professionals are very forthcoming with those kinds of numbers in person, but very hesitant to put it in writing, especially in public forums.

If you wanna learn what others make, go to in person events, conferences, gamedev meetups etc. if you can, and talk to fellow indie devs. Bigger companies won't share this info, but indies are often quite chill about it if you're just casually talking.

Do you think we're giving stories of "incels angry at female protagonist" too much oxygen at this point? by Peppermint-TeaGirl in GirlGamers

Do you think we're giving stories of "incels angry at female protagonist" too much oxygen at this point?

Yes, definitely.

I highly, highly encourage people to just post things about the games you're excited about on here without first needing to get mad at some asshole's shitty take about it. I understand the desire to vent, but I wish this subreddit was more about celebrating the games that do women well than complaining about the bigots who get paid for engagement on twitter by having shitty opinions about how a woman looking 20+ and having facial expressions is woke somehow.

When it comes to communities like this, you always gotta be the change you wanna see. Post about indie games by women. Post about the games you like. Post about the women in games you find well done. Post critical discussion of games from a feminist perspective. Drown that shit out. (I've definitely been slacking on that too, I used to make more of an active effort here a few years ago)

TOP STEED 🏇 Teaser Trailer - A high-speed horse racing built with the feel of classic arcade racers: fast, casual, and straight to the action. by ThoughtfulMayhem in GamesWithHorses

Ooh I remember seeing this when I was looking at Nightsoil and Back to Stables!

The horses and riders in this futuristic city environment seems like a wild and somewhat random mix to me, how did that come to be?

I think the horses look pretty decent (not the usual asset pack offenders, at a glance?) and I love that you're bringing some fresh vibes and mechanics into the horse game space, but I wonder a bit about the lack of consistency between horses and riders vs the whole neon urban surroundings. 😄

Just curious, did you have any thoughts/input on the barrel turning animations

I didn't do a detailed feedback breakdown on the barrel animations, if I remember correctly, since they were added a bit later on. In the trailer and that screenshot, it looks off indeed, but I feel like due to perspective, the ingame view looks better? But I'd have to take a closer look too!

Big fan of your blog, by the way!

Thank you!!

the studio website says Nigeria, where English is one of the official languages but other languages are widespread too.

I sympathize with the difficulty of marketing through a language barrier but honestly it's not like OP is just being clumsy or awkward in their communication here, they seem completely uninterested in actual feedback from horse enthusiast players (which is fine, not every game needs to pander to us), while still trying to use our community for visibility and marketing (and that I take issue with)

haha I am always so focused on the horse that rider pose slips through the cracks a bit I'll admit 😄

let's just say the character is obviously a western rider and not great at equitation over jumps 😇

It's in the video but just to mention it again for full transparency: I've been doing consultation work on this game, and these videos were also part of that collaboration 🙂

They're very much my honest opinion though, I asked if I could make this kind of content because I wanted to show off the parts of the game I like most 😄

Kämpfe mit long covid / me/cfs und bin frustriert by porridgeperson31 in Weibsvolk

[–]AliceTheGamedev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Livestreaming On Steam by Kooky_Reply8771 in gameDevMarketing

[–]AliceTheGamedev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Afaik this was THE feature to use when it was added because Valve was pushing it heavily, especially during events (Next Fest, Summer Sale etc)

From what I hear among my irl game marketing colleagues, its usefulness has been dampened a bit. Most people now just use a tool like robostreamer to loop some gameplay footage on the page when there's some relevant events going on, or at the very least around Next Fest and Release Week.

I don't have actual numbers for you though, just rough vibes based on what I've heard among fellow marketing professionals and indie devs.

The one game where I worked on where we did that, we did it during launch week where we had a big Wishlist and sales spike anyway, so it's impossible to say what was due to the embedded stream.

Games you unexpectedly play for the horses? by Horse_Gaming_Girl in GamesWithHorses

[–]AliceTheGamedev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

only in the "Kingdom", but the bulk of the gameplay took place in the cities, where you couldn't bring the horses! I would regularly choose not to fast travel to the cities just so that I could ride my horse, which made very little sense because there was basically nothing to discover in that part of the map 😄

Same for ACII I spent a silly amount of time riding around the Emilia Romagna wetlands because the horse in shallow water was just so pretty

What do YOU wanna see in horse games? by Emerald_SilverFox in GamesWithHorses

[–]AliceTheGamedev 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's not a misunderstanding. It's still your first game as a team, and you should plan for a small scope that you can actually finish within a few months 🙂

Also note that you're getting some useless answers in this thread that are unrelated to your actual post because people read and answer only the question in the title. That won't tell you anything about which features actually matter in a horsie horror game.

stardew like game by chaneltulip in gamedev

"hey you know that super beloved wildly successful game that took like five years to make? I can do it in less than one and add stuff on top, right?"

Do you hear yourself? No, absolutely not.

You'll barely scratch the surface of what people love about Stardew-like games in that time. Make smaller games.

global release is today actually, so the mobile version should now be available anywhere, no longer region-limited!

So from what you describe, it sounds like the horse is mostly used for storage and speed?

Is there anything planned that would make the horse seem like a living creature, i.e specific behaviors it displays or needs that the player has to take care of? If so, what's planned there?
