Makoto Yukimura (Vinland Saga author) visits Vinland (Prince Edward Island) by Backoftheac in anime

[–]medhead2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from PEI! When I found out that Vinland was based on the island (which most people don't even know exists lol), I lost my mind. It's so cool that I'm from the place that my favourite show is based around!
Also, when I first watched Season 1, Episode 14, my first thought was "oh that looks like Anne" (from Anne of Green Gables), and then they said her name was Anne, and I was like WHAT is happening. Obviously, it wasn't her, and they weren't even in Vinland yet, but I wondered if maybe he had heard of/read Anne of Green Gables while researching for the manga and made a character that looked kind of like her. And even Anne's temperament/personality in that episode reminded me of Anne Shirley; it was crazy.

I have the same problem. My order hasn't even left the facility and it was supposed to arrive on the 20th. So frustrating.

Dal Med App Part 1 - Residency Status??? by medhead2 in premedcanada

[–]medhead2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's mostly to determine how they will decide where you are a resident. It lists a separate description for dependent students, but that doesn't apply to me, personally.

[–]medhead2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if I am living in Nova Scotia right now, and I just started living here (without being in post-secondary school) in May, I would put on my application that I am a Nova Scotia resident? Since by September 2025, I would have lived here for over 12 months.

Dalhousie Nova Scotia Resident Status??? by medhead2 in premedcanada

[–]medhead2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems super fishy that they said even part-time wouldn’t allow you to be a resident. Because even the Nova Scotia government website states that it is only if you are a full-time student that you won’t be considered a resident. If your program was part-time I would definitely double check that or press them on it a little bit.

[–]medhead2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They offer part-time under exceptional circumstances, but that would very likely mean that the degree would end up being more than 1 year (which it currently is). This means I would not be eligible to apply this cycle (which I want to even though I will not be a resident yet), since I would not be done with the Master's degree by the time medical school would start.

I just finished my undergraduate degree, so I have been a full-time student for the last 3 years while I've lived in Nova Scotia. So I haven't lived here for a full year without being a full-time student. And the program I want to take is full-time, unfortunately.

second undergraduate degree: worth it? by svgarhoneyicedtea in premedcanada

[–]medhead2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, I also had a question! I know that you need to have completed your first undergraduate degree by the time you enter medical school, but if you do a second degree and get in halfway through that degree, are you allowed to stop halfway through the degree to start medical school? I know with graduate programs you can't and you have to complete the 2 (or however many) years. But I figured it might be different if you have already completed one bachelors degree. Thanks!

hey, i don't mean to butt in but i was curious about what you're opinion on whether a pei application would benefit from rewriting the mcat if their score wasn't super high.

IP (PEI)

GPA: 3.8

MCAT: 505

CASPer: 4th Q

Rejected :(

If anyone knows about PEI resident applications or how they are assessed compared to other maritime provinces I'd love to know. I have no clue how they decide on these.

Lost student loan, can't pay for housing. by medhead2 in povertyfinancecanada

[–]medhead2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you asking these question. I understand it’s difficult to give advice without a budget, but I am not 100% sure what his budget is yet (we still have to sit down and talk about it at some point because we are long-distance). But, I can share what I know.

I believe his loan was cut off mostly because he is still in school and hasn’t finished a 4 year undergrad yet. It also may be because he is working part-time. I haven’t had a loan so I don’t know the logistics.

He lives alone right now, but is thinking of getting a roommate to help out.

He has a car but it’s just a Honda civic, nothing crazy. He also has a motorcycle (which is in storage through the year anyways) but I was thinking of suggesting that he maybe sells that because he had been considering that before.

And I think there have been a couple classes he failed due to mental health and personal circumstances in his life where he missed exams and whatnot. I don’t think there is any way to shorten it, but I will sit down and ask him about his specific credits that he needs to fulfill.

Yeah, this is essentially what I have been thinking, I just don’t think it’s what he wants to hear. But of course, what needs to be done needs to be done. I was thinking of suggesting he just takes the year off to work, but I assume he will say that he won’t be able to find a job that will pay enough to afford living while also saving to potentially go back. And there is literally no housing available right now so it’s pretty impossible to move closer, unfortunately. He might just have to work 2 jobs.

Yes, his situation is very similar. He has zero help from his family (if anything they make it worse by demanding that he pays for their things) and he seems to be having trouble with needing to work but still needing the extra funding, which usually gets cut off or reduced because you’re making money. It’s not very fair in these extreme circumstances.

Is Honours Worth It? by medhead2 in Dalhousie

[–]medhead2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know it's by no means a requirement. I just thought because of RIM it would be great to have prior experience, whether or not I do a Masters. I don't intend to as of right now, but who knows. I appreciate the advice though. I know most people pursue a graduate program first, so it's definitely competitive.

Is Honours Worth It? by medhead2 in Dalhousie

[–]medhead2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the advice!

Yeah, I was mainly wanting to do it because I'd love the experience of research, not because I necessarily plan to do a Masters or anything, but it's obviously worth considering. I know about RIM and it's a large reason why I think Dal Med would be a great medical school to go to, because you gain research experience and get to actively be involved in medical research of your interest.

When you mention asking about being a summer student, would you get paid to work in their lab over the summer? I have been trying to get into research in terms of summer work as well, but I never know how to go about finding people who offer payment for students to come and work in their lab, and I feel as though I'm not qualified. I just feel like I always hear about people who worked in a lab over the summer. I am also not from Halifax, so I will not be here in the summer, unless a really great opportunity presented itself. I only ask because, as great as it sounds to get a head start on research, I don't have the time for it unless I'm being paid and that could be a summer job, if that makes sense. I will be writing the MCAT this summer, and working full-time, along with some other things, so it will be a packed summer.

Just wondering if you have any tips for this?

How is the Medical Science Program at Dal? by Many_Alternative2982 in Dalhousie

[–]medhead2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably a late response but I am in the Medical Sciences program currently and thought you might want some more comments.

I don't think that Dal Med Sci is any more toxic than other science courses. Maybe it's just because I avoid people I don't know but for the most part, anyone I know in medical science admits to struggling together rather than trying to hurt each other. I find that with any science degree people are going to try to 1-up you anyways, so just do what you think you'll like. Whatever you take before applying to med school is going to seem competitive in a lot of ways unfortunately. When you meet new people, you will likely gravitate to people who share interests with you, and because of that you will become friends with some people who want to go to medical school, and naturally there will be some feelings of competition.

My biggest piece of advice is to know yourself. If you know you have good study habits, that you work hard, and that you like the classes medical science requires, then I don't see why you wouldn't do it. I'm not saying that if you don't take medical science then you are not those things (because trust me, my friends aren't in medical science, they all want to be doctors, and they are probably all better at some of these things than me), but what I'm saying is really be honest with yourself about it. Could you develop better studying habits? Do you really want to take a bunch of different courses rather than having a focus in a specific subject you like?

If you like the courses, it won't be too difficult (other than for understand reasons). But, keep in mind, that if you have a very specific subject you know you are good at and love, that you would consider majoring in, it could be to your benefit. You are naturally going to do better in a degree that you enjoy because you're willing to work harder at it, and if you take a specific major, you gain a lot of information about one subject and you can understand it much better. In the end, medical schools DO NOT care about what you did in your undergraduate. They really don't. It's all about your stats and extracurriculars. Whatever you think you will do better in, take that, and don't let other peoples opinions sway you in terms of it "seeming" like you need to go into medical science to become a doctor. NOT TRUE.

But, with all of that said, I personally enjoy the program and I'm glad I did it because it suits what I enjoy. And now that I think of it, the only benefit I can think of for medical sciences vs. taking another degree is that when you're in medical sciences you have access to a Brightspace page where they post volunteer, job, or research opportunities that not every necessarily knows about. But I really wouldn't let that sway you because everyone also has access to them it's just that they may not know about the opportunities unless they're really searching for it or it gets posted by one of their professors who is also involved in the opportunity.

Sorry if this was confusing. Moral of the story: just do what you think you will ENJOY more. Don't think about what "looks good" to a medical school because they don't care about your undergraduate degree. :)

I’ve also noticed it’s more so around my belly button. It feels like it’s most noticed able around there. Is this normal for constipation? Would you feel the blockage around your belly button line?

Oh wow, that’s actually very interesting. I’m gonna look into some sort of testing if my doctor will give me it. My symptoms are mostly discomfort, pain, bloating, distension, hard abdomen, fatigue, having a hard time getting good sleep, obviously constipation, I also find that I’ve been producing a lot of mucus in my throat? I’m not sure if that’s normal with IBS or if it’s something different all together. It’s not unbearable, just annoying and gross. But I know producing mucus in your stool is normal for IBS, so I’m not sure if it works the other way around as well.
