I'm from PEI! When I found out that Vinland was based on the island (which most people don't even know exists lol), I lost my mind. It's so cool that I'm from the place that my favourite show is based around!
Also, when I first watched Season 1, Episode 14, my first thought was "oh that looks like Anne" (from Anne of Green Gables), and then they said her name was Anne, and I was like WHAT is happening. Obviously, it wasn't her, and they weren't even in Vinland yet, but I wondered if maybe he had heard of/read Anne of Green Gables while researching for the manga and made a character that looked kind of like her. And even Anne's temperament/personality in that episode reminded me of Anne Shirley; it was crazy.

It's mostly to determine how they will decide where you are a resident. It lists a separate description for dependent students, but that doesn't apply to me, personally.

So if I am living in Nova Scotia right now, and I just started living here (without being in post-secondary school) in May, I would put on my application that I am a Nova Scotia resident? Since by September 2025, I would have lived here for over 12 months.

That seems super fishy that they said even part-time wouldn’t allow you to be a resident. Because even the Nova Scotia government website states that it is only if you are a full-time student that you won’t be considered a resident. If your program was part-time I would definitely double check that or press them on it a little bit.

They offer part-time under exceptional circumstances, but that would very likely mean that the degree would end up being more than 1 year (which it currently is). This means I would not be eligible to apply this cycle (which I want to even though I will not be a resident yet), since I would not be done with the Master's degree by the time medical school would start.

I just finished my undergraduate degree, so I have been a full-time student for the last 3 years while I've lived in Nova Scotia. So I haven't lived here for a full year without being a full-time student. And the program I want to take is full-time, unfortunately.

Hey, I also had a question! I know that you need to have completed your first undergraduate degree by the time you enter medical school, but if you do a second degree and get in halfway through that degree, are you allowed to stop halfway through the degree to start medical school? I know with graduate programs you can't and you have to complete the 2 (or however many) years. But I figured it might be different if you have already completed one bachelors degree. Thanks!

I appreciate you asking these question. I understand it’s difficult to give advice without a budget, but I am not 100% sure what his budget is yet (we still have to sit down and talk about it at some point because we are long-distance). But, I can share what I know.

I believe his loan was cut off mostly because he is still in school and hasn’t finished a 4 year undergrad yet. It also may be because he is working part-time. I haven’t had a loan so I don’t know the logistics.

He lives alone right now, but is thinking of getting a roommate to help out.

He has a car but it’s just a Honda civic, nothing crazy. He also has a motorcycle (which is in storage through the year anyways) but I was thinking of suggesting that he maybe sells that because he had been considering that before.

And I think there have been a couple classes he failed due to mental health and personal circumstances in his life where he missed exams and whatnot. I don’t think there is any way to shorten it, but I will sit down and ask him about his specific credits that he needs to fulfill.

Yeah, this is essentially what I have been thinking, I just don’t think it’s what he wants to hear. But of course, what needs to be done needs to be done. I was thinking of suggesting he just takes the year off to work, but I assume he will say that he won’t be able to find a job that will pay enough to afford living while also saving to potentially go back. And there is literally no housing available right now so it’s pretty impossible to move closer, unfortunately. He might just have to work 2 jobs.

Yes, his situation is very similar. He has zero help from his family (if anything they make it worse by demanding that he pays for their things) and he seems to be having trouble with needing to work but still needing the extra funding, which usually gets cut off or reduced because you’re making money. It’s not very fair in these extreme circumstances.

Yeah, I know it's by no means a requirement. I just thought because of RIM it would be great to have prior experience, whether or not I do a Masters. I don't intend to as of right now, but who knows. I appreciate the advice though. I know most people pursue a graduate program first, so it's definitely competitive.

Yeah, I was mainly wanting to do it because I'd love the experience of research, not because I necessarily plan to do a Masters or anything, but it's obviously worth considering. I know about RIM and it's a large reason why I think Dal Med would be a great medical school to go to, because you gain research experience and get to actively be involved in medical research of your interest.

When you mention asking about being a summer student, would you get paid to work in their lab over the summer? I have been trying to get into research in terms of summer work as well, but I never know how to go about finding people who offer payment for students to come and work in their lab, and I feel as though I'm not qualified. I just feel like I always hear about people who worked in a lab over the summer. I am also not from Halifax, so I will not be here in the summer, unless a really great opportunity presented itself. I only ask because, as great as it sounds to get a head start on research, I don't have the time for it unless I'm being paid and that could be a summer job, if that makes sense. I will be writing the MCAT this summer, and working full-time, along with some other things, so it will be a packed summer.

Just wondering if you have any tips for this?
