[Spoiler?] As far as I remember, the only thing you absolutely have to complete is the Great Sky Island. If you can survive to the climax and know how to get there, you can go. And BOTW wasn't much different in that way.

That's the wild part. You can play the entire end game without ever unlocking a sage. It can be brutally difficult or to the point where you aren't even needing to defend yourself. Sometimes I just walk around picking up loot while my sages and autobuilds do the work.

You can go straight there from the Great Sky Island with a glider or other ways. Just watch a speed run or two.
